After releasing 17-year-old: Israel still holding bodies of 11 Palestinian martyrs
The Palestinian Commission of Detainees' and ex-Detainees' Affairs said on Thursday that the Israeli occupation authorities are still holding 11 bodies of martyrs.
Their announcement came after the authorities returned the body of Muhammad Maher Turkman, a 17-year-old from the greater Jenin area who was killed in October of last year in an Israeli raid.
The commission said that Israel imposed very difficult conditions on Turkman's repatriation, preventing more than 25 people from attending the funeral, and blocking all media coverage.
Turkman was buried in Jadeidi-Makr, near Acre, the birthplace of his mother, after the Israeli occupation authorities conditioned the return on burying the body in '48 territories.
Israel holds the bodies of Palestinians who have been killed. The punitive measure has been roundly condemned by human rights groups.
Anis Douleh, who died in 1980, has been held the longest by the Israeli authorities. The others include Aziz Oweisat, whose body has been held since 2018, Faris Baroud, Nassar Taqatqa, and Bassam Sayeh, who died in 2019, Saadi Al-Gharabli and Kamal Abu Waer, who died in 2020, Sami al-Imour, who died In 2021, Daoud Zubeidi, Mohammad Maher Turkman, and Nasser Abu Hmeid, who died in 2022. The body of Khader Adnan, who died in May this year after a three-month hunger strike in protest against his administrative detention, is also being held.
