Resignation of the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army... "The Generals' War" in Netanyahu's Service
Since Friday, incomplete details about the "war of generals" have begun to emerge in Israel, following the leaking of the resignation letter of the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Israeli army, Amir Baram, which was considered to be a hint to the Chief of Staff of the army, Herzi Halevi, that he too must resign soon.
It is no secret that Halevi will resign soon, perhaps within a month or two according to expectations. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yisrael Katz are pushing in this direction, but today's Israeli newspapers, Sunday, began to reveal problematic relations within the army leadership, between Halevi and the generals.
The military analyst for Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, Yossi Yehoshua, pointed out that "in the days following Halevi's resignation, and this day is approaching after Baram's announcement, many closed mouths will be opened, and the smell that will come out of them will not be pleasant."
He added that Halevi himself heard harsh criticism directed at him by the outgoing head of the Central Command, Yehuda Fuchs, the commander of the Northern Corps (who was forced to resign), Sa'ar Tzur, the commander of the Manpower Division, Yaniv Ashur, the outgoing head of the Eavesdropping Division, Eran Niv, and the outgoing commander of the Ground Forces, Tamir Yedi. "This is a partial list and does not include the commanders of military divisions and generals who participated in the invasion of the Gaza Strip. All of them together paint a dangerous, gloomy and disturbing picture."
Yehoshua described Baram's resignation as "a dramatic and unprecedented event. Never has a deputy commander of the army expressed such distrust of the number one soldier, especially at the height of a very bloody war. Although relations between Halevi and Baram were never good and Halevi saw him as an imposed successor (to the position), the war brought them to abysmal depths, and Baram's resignation revealed a little of that."
Baram feels that during the war, Halevi sought to remove him from the small decision-making circle, which included the commander of the Operations Division and the commanders of the Southern and Northern Commands in the army.
Israeli media reported today that Baram asked to resign from his position last summer, according to his resignation letter to Halevi. “At your request and in coordination with the Minister of Defense, I have extended my term in office for another half a year, until next February, because I thought it was appropriate and right to respond to your request due to the intensity of the war.”
According to Haaretz military analyst Amos Harel, Baram submitted his resignation after realizing that rotating positions in the army would take a long time, and this resignation “further complicates Halevi’s position,” because the latter will not be able to appoint a new deputy and will not be able to influence the next chief of staff, because Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yisrael Katz will not allow him to do so because they will seek to appoint a chief of staff who is loyal to them, “which exacerbates the crisis in the army.”
"The Israeli political and security leadership, headed by Netanyahu, Halevi, and Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar, failed miserably in the October 7 massacre and in the events that led to it," Harel added. "From a general and moral standpoint, anyone who was directly involved in it must step down and not continue in office until the end of his term."
But he pointed out that the "war of the generals" serves the interests of Netanyahu, who "refuses to acknowledge his responsibility. He and the Likud ministers are trying by all means to thwart the formation of an official commission of inquiry, while Halevi and Bar have taken responsibility for the failure, but are not rushing to implement it (by resigning)."
Harel continued that Netanyahu's method of taking advantage of the "war of the generals" includes directing accusations in all directions in order to "cover up the allegations of failure against Netanyahu and those close to him."
