Medical crimes, torture, abuse and starvation against Gaza detainees

The Commission of Prisoners' Affairs and the Prisoners' Club revealed new testimonies from Gaza detainees after visits were made to 23 detainees in the Negev Prison and the Naftali Camp over the course of two days.

The testimonies included shocking details about the systematic torture that the detainees were subjected to, specifically during the first period of their detention, during the investigation period, and today, after 464 days of the war of extermination, and a year or more since the arrest of the majority of those visited, the crimes of torture, abuse, starvation, medical crimes, severe beatings, and repression loom over the accounts and testimonies of the detainees, in addition to the harsh conditions of detention, and the continued spread of scabies among them.

The Authority and the Club continued, in a new report added to a group of reports through which they revealed the systematic crimes practiced by the occupation system against the detainees of Gaza, which confirms once again that the (Sde Teiman) camp, which was the most prominent address for torture operations, is no longer the only camp in which torture and atrocities were practiced, including sexual assaults. Rather, the testimonies of detainees in most of the central prisons and camps reflected the same level of systematic brutality, and we mention here mainly the (Negev) and (Ofer) prisons.

The extremist minister (Ben Gvir) recently released a video from (Raqvet) prison, which is a prison located under the cells of (Nitzan Ramla) prison, which was reopened after the war to detain detainees from Gaza. It is one of several camps (created) by the occupation after the war to detain detainees from Gaza, the most prominent of which are: (Ofer camp, Naftali camp, Anatot camp, and Sde Teiman camp), which are the camps known only to the relevant institutions, noting that the detainees from Gaza were distributed to all the central prisons, and were detained in many camps that the army established in the field in the Gaza envelope.

The Authority and the Club are reviewing some of the testimonies they obtained from detainees in the Negev prison, in addition to statements from detainees held in the Naftali camp.

"They burned me with hot water"

“Since my arrest, I have been severely beaten, to the point of sustaining fractures in my body, in an attempt to extract confessions from me,” said detainee (K.N.), 45, who has been detained since December 2023. “I remained in a camp in the Gaza Strip for 58 days, and it was like the torment of the afterlife – shackling and beating all the time, humiliation and insults. When I was transferred to the Negev prison, they burned me with hot water by throwing hot water at me with an electric kettle. The burn marks are still visible on my body. Today, I live in tents, and the tents are torn. We suffer from the bitter cold, and today we are dying from the cold and from hunger.”

"I go to bed hungry and wake up hungry"

As for the detainee (A.H.), 21 years old: “I was arrested in February 2024, during a displacement operation. I was transferred to one of the camps in the Gaza Strip, and I stayed there for 12 days. Then I was transferred to a camp in Jerusalem, then to Ofer, then to the Negev. Every trip was a journey of torment and death. Today, boils, wounds, and holes cover my body, after I was infected with scabies. I currently go to bed hungry and wake up hungry. In addition to everything I suffer from, I suffer from a problem with eye pressure, and I need follow-up. Since my childhood, I have not seen in my right eye, and today my left eye is in grave danger.”

"They beat us to death for a whole day, and the occupation soldiers urinated on us."

The detainee (M.H.), 21 years old, who has been detained since December 2024, said, “The first days of my detention were terrible. I was subjected to torture and abuse. I was taken to the (Al-Barawi) yard and subjected to severe beatings for a whole day. “They slaughtered us with beatings for a whole day.” Then they transferred us to another place, threw sewage water on us, urinated on us, and then transferred us to a camp for 27 days. There we remained (kneeling) on our knees, blindfolded, and with our hands and feet tied. Later, we were transferred to the Negev prison, and today we live in torment and slow death around the clock.” The lawyer indicated that the detainee (M.H.) came out wearing a torn summer (T-shirt), and he was shivering from the cold, and scabies covered his body.

"We live in hell"

The detainee (Kh.J.) said: “At the beginning of my detention, we were living in hell. We did not know our fate or our legal status. All forms of crimes, abuse and deprivation were committed against us. Today, we are facing hunger. The quantities of food are very small and unfit for human consumption. Most of the prisoners collect food morsels so that they can eat one meal at night. Since our detention, we have been deprived of sugar and salt. Today, we are suffering from difficult detention conditions and are deprived of all the basic necessities of life.”

"The detainees are hungry, sick and shivering from the cold all night long."

The detainee (M.A.), 25 years old, said: “I was arrested by the occupation army from one of the schools, and I was subjected to beating, stripping, and field investigation. I was later transferred to one of the camps in the envelope, then to a camp in Jerusalem. I was handcuffed and blindfolded the entire time, then I was transferred to Ofer prison and then to the Negev prison. Today, most of the prisoners suffer from fatigue and emaciation, and this worsens with time. Many of them also suffer from fainting spells. The conditions are very difficult, and they remain the same. The prisoners are hungry and sick, and they shiver from the cold all night long.”

"My plastic eye fell out from the severe beating."

The detainee (M.D.) said: “I was arrested from one of the shelters, and I was accompanied by his family. After my arrest, I was transferred to the Gaza envelope, and I was detained for 60 days, then I was transferred to the Negev prison. As a result of the severe beating I was subjected to, I lost my plastic eye, and today I suffer from a cavity in my eye as a result of that. The soldiers did not stop there, but they proceeded to take my glasses.”

Detainees' statements on their urgent need for treatment and health care

One of the detainees who was visited in the camp had his wife and family members martyred.

In the Naftali camp, the detainees’ testimonies reflected the same level of brutality practiced by the prison system in other prisons, with very limited differences. The detainees focused mainly on the first stage of arrest and investigation, which took up the largest part of the talk about the abuse and torture. Despite some differences in the detention conditions compared to other camps, the detainees suffer mainly from medical crimes and deprivation of treatment. Among the detainees who were visited, one of them suffers from cancer, and had undergone several surgeries before his arrest. Today, he suffers from a difficult health condition and needs health care. This is an example of other detainees in the camp who face medical crimes, in addition to the harsh and difficult detention conditions. A large number of them also lost loved ones and relatives in the ongoing war of extermination. Among them was a prisoner whose family members were martyred, and whose father later died, which had a harsh impact during the visit.

Once again, the Commission and the Prisoners Club review the most important facts about the issue of Gaza detainees and the arrest campaigns:

• Until today, and since the beginning of the war of extermination, there is no clear estimate of the number of detainees from Gaza in the occupation’s prisons and camps. The only available data is what the occupation’s prison administration announced at the beginning of January, (1882) of those it classified as (illegal combatants), including four female detainees held in (Al-Damon) prison, and dozens of children specifically in (Megiddo) prison, and (Ofer) camp.

• The institutions were unable to monitor the number of arrests from Gaza, in light of the crime of enforced disappearance imposed by the occupation on Gaza detainees since the beginning of the war, whose number is estimated in the thousands.

• The occupation has established several special camps to detain Gaza detainees, in addition to the central prisons. Some of these are known, and there may be undeclared camps: the most prominent of which were the (Sde Teiman), (Anatot), (Naftali) and (Ofer) camps.

• The accounts and testimonies of the detainees in Gaza represented a significant shift in the level of brutality of the occupation system, which reflected an unprecedented level of torture crimes, abuse, and starvation, in addition to systematic medical crimes, sexual assaults, and their use as human shields.

• The Sde Teiman camp was a prominent address for torture crimes and horrific medical crimes against Gaza detainees, in addition to what was reported and testimonies of other released detainees about rapes and sexual assaults there, knowing that this camp is not the only place where Gaza detainees are held, as the occupation distributed them to several central prisons and camps, and carried out systematic torture operations against them, parallel to the torture operations in the Sde Teiman camp, including the Negev and Ofer prisons.

These crimes led to the martyrdom of dozens of detainees, in addition to the field executions that were carried out against others, noting that the relevant institutions announced only (35) martyrs from the detainees of Gaza, and they are among (54) detainees and prisoners who were martyred since the beginning of the war of extermination, while the occupation continues to conceal the rest of the names of detainees who were martyred in the camps and prisons.

•The occupation continues to prevent the International Committee of the Red Cross from visiting them, as well as all detainees.

It is noteworthy that the occupation carried out extensive arrest campaigns in northern Gaza, noting that these arrest campaigns included dozens of medical staff, and to this day there is no information available about the fate of those who were recently arrested and are still subject to enforced disappearance.
