Israeli army recommends establishing permanent buffer zone in Beit Hanoun
Senior Israeli army officers have recommended establishing a permanent security buffer zone in Beit Hanoun, north of the Gaza Strip, and preventing the return of Palestinian residents to the area from which they were displaced in light of the escalation of Israeli attacks, under the pretext of removing threats to adjacent Israeli settlements, according to what was reported by the Israeli Army Radio on Sunday.
According to the recommendations made by senior officers in the Southern Command, which leads the occupation's military operations in the northern Gaza Strip, establishing this area on the heights overlooking the city of Sderot and the adjacent Israeli areas requires "permanently preventing the return of Palestinians to parts of Beit Hanoun."
According to the report, the targeted area is the Beit Hanoun hills, which provide a direct view of the adjacent Israeli settlements, and the Israeli security establishment considers it "a security threat, and can be used to fire anti-tank fire or carry out sniper operations."
The recommendations include preventing the construction of any future Palestinian homes or buildings in Beit Hanoun that might “expose” Israeli settlements or even the train line in Sderot, and the senior officers recommend creating an expanded security zone under the pretext of “removing the threat of anti-tank missiles and any potential sniper threats from these areas toward Israeli territory.”
The report stated that "until now, no decision has been made regarding these recommendations, and the political leadership in Tel Aviv has not made strategic decisions regarding the northern Gaza Strip," noting that this recommendation is consistent with the generals' plan that aims to displace the northern Gaza Strip and isolate it from its south.
According to the Israeli Army Radio, "these recommendations are largely linked to the terms of a possible prisoner deal, which the parties concerned hope to reach soon," in light of the momentum that the American side is trying to give to the negotiations before the inauguration of the administration of President-elect Donald Trump.
