Updated data indicates that the height of the tallest tree in China is 83.4 meters
SHANGHAI -- (Xinhua) -- A Chinese scientific investigation team on Sunday released updated data on the height of China's tallest tree, which was 83.4 meters, according to the Shanghai Zhenshan Botanical Garden.
The record-height tree, whose scientific name is Abies ernestii var. salouenensis, is located in a mountain valley in southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region. The area that includes the tree, with an average elevation of 2,800 meters above sea level, enjoys heavy rains, a mild climate, and moderate sunshine.
The tree was first found during a scientific investigation conducted by the Institute of Botany under the Chinese Academy of Sciences in May this year. The researchers discovered a number of giant trees with a height of more than 75 meters in that forest, including the tree "Abies ernestii var. salouenensis", whose height was initially determined to be 83.2 meters, by a drone.
A team from the Institute of Botany, Shanghai Zhenshan Botanical Garden and other institutes measured the tree's height again last August and confirmed that it is 83.4 meters high.
The researchers also measured the diameter of the tree at chest level, and said it was 207 cm, which led them to conclude that it is about 380 years old.
