EU rejects attempts to classify UNRWA as a “terrorist organization”
The European Union expressed its rejection of attempts to classify a United Nations agency as a "terrorist organization."
The Union confirmed in a statement issued by its media office on Friday that it is “deeply concerned about the discussions taking place in the Israeli Knesset regarding the classification of UNRWA as a terrorist organization, and the removal of immunities and privileges granted to its employees.”
It also stressed that he is "concerned that the Israeli Land Authority has ordered UNRWA to evacuate its buildings in East Jerusalem within the next thirty days."
The European Union condemned any attempts to classify a United Nations agency as a terrorist organization, recalling the critical and irreplaceable role of UNRWA in the humanitarian response in Gaza, as the agency provides vital services to millions of people in Gaza and the West Bank, and throughout the region, including Lebanon. And Jordan.
It said that the European Union is a strong supporter of the Agency, and will remain, with its member states, its largest donor, and that it is committed to continuing its support.
It stressed that he "is a strong supporter of the United Nations and the multilateral, rules-based global governance system, of which UNRWA, as a United Nations agency, is a part."
It "urged the Israeli authorities to allow UNRWA to continue carrying out its critical work in line with its mandate."
The Israeli Knesset approved, in preliminary reading, the day before yesterday, Wednesday, a draft law declaring the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) to be a “terrorist organization,” which was submitted by Knesset member Yulia Milinovsky from the Yisrael Beytena party.
