President Jimmy Carter, who called Israel an apartheid state, dies at 100
The Carter Center (a non-governmental organization) announced on Sunday the death of former US President Jimmy Carter at the age of 100.
Carter, the 39th president of the United States and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, died at his home in Georgia.
It is noteworthy that former President Carter had described Israel as an apartheid state in his famous book "Palestine, Peace Not Apartheid".
The president, who is considered the godfather of the Camp David Accords between Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin in 1979, said that the book was based on the talks that Carter hosted during his presidency between Begin and Sadat of Egypt that led to the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel.
In this book, Carter argues that Israel's continued control and settlement construction were the main obstacles to a comprehensive peace agreement in the Middle East. The book sparked controversy because of his description of Israel as an apartheid state, and his use of this description as the title of his book.
According to the Carter Center, he is the longest-lived president in U.S. history.
“My father was a hero, not just to me, but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights and selfless love,” said Chip Carter, the former president’s son.
Public services will be held in Atlanta and Washington, D.C., followed by a private burial in Plains, Georgia.
