Mexican chef Elena Regadas, owner of the " Rosita " restaurant in Mexico City, was crowned the best chef in the world on Tuesday, according to the British "50 Best" rating.

For the third year in a row, the “50 Best” classification rewards a chef from Latin America, after the Colombian Leonor Espinosa in 2022 and the Peruvian Pia Leon in 2021.

And in her restaurant, which opened in 2010 in a private hotel within the Roma neighborhood of the capital, Mexico City, Elena Reyadas offers an evolution of traditional Mexican dishes, through a menu that changes daily thanks to seasonal and local ingredients from small producers.

And she has made a name for herself using handmade pasta such as tortellini hoya santa (Mexican pepper). Pebian (a sauce of pureed vegetables that may have its origins in the Aztec and Mayan kitchens) with pistachios, romeritos tacos (fresh herb), and tamales (indigenous dish) of corn served with warm smoked cream.

"It is a great honor to present this year's award to Elena Regadas, a chef who is paving the way for the next generations of pioneering women in Mexico and beyond," William Drew, Content Director at Britain's 50Best Restaurants, said in a statement.

"By supporting traditional dishes and local biodiversity, regadas are working for the future of Mexican food," he added.

The award was revealed ahead of the upcoming 50 Beast concert this year in Valencia, Spain, on June 20.

The scion of a large family, Elena Regadas learned to cook since childhood, then studied English literature at the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

However, she never stopped cooking and worked in restaurants throughout her studies and became a chef at the end of her college career.

The chef spent four years in London under Italian chef Giorgio Locatelli, before returning to Mexico to open her restaurant, Rosetta.

It recently launched a scholarship program for women, with the aim of promoting gender parity in kitchens.
