CAIRO - (Xinhua) - The container ship "EVER ATOP", the largest and most modern container ship in the world, crossed the Suez Canal during its maiden voyage.


The Suez Canal Authority stated today (Sunday) in a statement, a copy of which was received by Xinhua News Agency, that the navigation traffic in the Suez Canal witnessed yesterday, Saturday, the transit of the giant container ship "EVER ATOP", the largest and most modern container ship in the world, on its first sea voyage, within The caravan of the south in the navigational course of the new Suez Canal, on its journey from Malaysia to the Netherlands.


She explained that "EVER ATOP" is the tenth ship in a series of the latest giant container ships of the shipping line "EVER GREEN" of the "A24" class, all of which have transited the Suez Canal so far.


The ship is distinguished by its huge dimensions, as it is 400 meters long, 61.5 meters wide, 16.30 meters draft, and its tonnage is 224,000 tons, and its carrying capacity exceeds 24,000 containers.


In accordance with the protocol followed by the Suez Canal Authority in dealing with giant ships crossing the canal for the first time, Lieutenant General Osama Rabie, Chairman of the Authority, Captain Hisham Helmy, Chief Pilot Mumtaz, and Captain Ashraf Habib, Chief Pilot, were delegated to board the container ship "EVER ATOP" and welcome its crew. And handing a souvenir to the captain of the ship.


The head of the authority emphasized that the successive transit of the latest and largest container ships through the Suez Canal is a certificate of confidence in the canal’s ability to receive the current and future generations of the global fleet of container ships, and an affirmation of the canal’s capabilities that made it the first destination and the perfect choice for the transit of giant container ships operating on the Suez Canal. Yesterday, Saturday, the navigation traffic in the canal witnessed the crossing of 83 ships from both directions, with a total tonnage of 5.5 million tons.
