A senior American official on the Lebanon-Israel front: A very dangerous period and something may start without warning
US officials told CNN that the ongoing discussions to prevent escalation between Israel and Hezbollah come at a time when the situation on Israel's northern border has reached a "dangerous turning point."
CNN quoted a senior American official as saying: “The fact that we were able to maintain the front (with these borders) for so long was a miracle,” referring to efforts to prevent the exchange of fire between Israel and Hezbollah from escalating to Total war.
Another senior official in President Joe Biden's administration explained to CNN, saying: "We are entering a very dangerous period... something may start without warning."
The senior American official noted that “the repercussions of a broader war between Israel and Hezbollah could be devastating,” as Hezbollah possesses an arsenal of rockets, missiles, and drones that is much larger, more advanced, and more destructive than Hamas’ weapons, which are mostly short-range missiles. But some of them can reach deep into Israel with precise capabilities, and the Israeli army estimates that Hezbollah has approximately 150,000 rockets and shells, including thousands of precision munitions, according to CNN.
The senior American official (the first) added that the possibility of war is still increasing with the fading possibilities of reaching a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, as if an agreement is reached, there is a “parallel diplomatic agreement between Israel and Hezbollah.” It was negotiated by US envoy Amos Hochstein, which the US believes will take effect.
Hockstein visited Israel and Lebanon this week, meeting with senior Israeli and Lebanese officials to defend his plan and dissuade both sides from further escalation.
But cross-border attacks between Israel and Hezbollah reached a new level last week, and Israel warned Hezbollah on Tuesday of the possibility of an "all-out war" after the release of footage shot by a Hezbollah drone, which appeared in the 2017 video. 9 minutes, aerial views of the city of Haifa showing the Rafael Military Industries Complex, and the Haifa Port area, which includes the Haifa Military Base, which is the main naval base in the Israeli army, the Haifa Civil Port, the Haifa Power Station, the Haifa Airport, oil tanks, and petrochemical facilities.
The submarine unit's command building, the Sa'ar 4.5 ship, which is designated for logistical support, and the Sa'ar 5 ship, also appeared.
According to CNN, citing officials familiar with the discussions, Israeli officials told the United States, and the United States agreed, that they have the resources necessary to launch an attack against Hezbollah if they need to, especially if its campaign ends in Rafah, south of the country. Gaza.
Officials pointed out that the Israeli army intends to maintain its presence in Gaza, but its most violent operations in the Strip will largely end after Rafah.
However, US officials do not believe that Israel has a sustainable post-war transition and governance plan in Gaza that would ensure that the Strip does not fall again under militant control, if Israel is forced to divert resources toward a war with Lebanon.
An American official stated that officials in the United States did not explicitly tell Israel that they oppose any attack against Hezbollah, but they warn them that their actions may lead to a larger war that both sides do not actually want, noting that Israel has made clear that it can carry out a “blitzkrieg” war, but The United States warns that it may not be able to ensure that the campaign remains limited.
It is worth noting that the Secretary-General of Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, said in a speech yesterday, Wednesday: “The threat of war over the course of 8 months does not scare us, and there are people who evaluate this possibility as serious. We, as the resistance, have prepared ourselves for the worst days, and the enemy knows what He was waiting for him, so he remained deterred.”
Nasrallah continued: “The enemy knows that no place in the entity will remain safe from our missiles and marches, and it is not random. We have a real and large bank of goals, and we have the ability to reach these goals in a way that shakes the foundations of the entity,” pointing out that “the enemy also knows that what awaits him at sea is The Mediterranean is very large, and all its coasts, ships and ships will be targeted.”
