Trump nominates Arab-American doctor for US Surgeon General
US President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Jordanian-born physician Janet Nesheiwat as US Surgeon General, according to Fox News Channel 16.
Trump said in a statement that Dr. Nashewat is a fierce advocate and powerful communicator in the field of preventive medicine and public health.
“I am very proud to announce today that Dr. Nesheiwat will be the Nation’s Surgeon General, a double board-certified physician with an unwavering commitment to saving and healing thousands of American lives, and a strong and consistent advocate for preventive medicine and public health,” he added.
Trump continued: "She is committed to ensuring that Americans have access to high-quality, affordable health care, and believes in empowering individuals to take charge of their health so they can live longer, healthier lives," according to the Jordanian news agency Petra.
The position of US Surgeon General is the highest medical position in the country, and its holder is granted the decision to approve any medicine for any epidemic in the world, and is directly linked to the US President.
Trump said she treated patients during the COVID-19 pandemic, cared for victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Joplin, and worked for the disaster relief organization Samaritan's Purse, which provides care in Morocco, Haiti and Poland, Reuters reported.
Many Americans know her as a Fox News contributor who discussed issues such as monkeypox, the effects of alcohol and drug abuse, or disaster relief. Nesheiwat was a medical contributor to Fox News, and a Fox News spokesperson said that as of Trump’s announcement, she is no longer a contributor.
“I am deeply honored and humbled by this nomination to serve as Surgeon General of the United States,” Nesheiwat wrote on Twitter. “Thank you, Mr. President, for your trust. I pledge to work tirelessly to advance health, inspire hope, and serve our nation with dedication and compassion.”
Nashiwat's appointment will require Senate confirmation.
