Borrell criticizes countries that abstain from supporting ICC decision to arrest Netanyahu
The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, criticized the countries that did not express their support for the International Criminal Court's decision to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, calling on them to abide by the decision.
This came in a speech on Saturday during a conference on Israel and Palestine held in Greek Cyprus.
He said, "This decision is not political, but rather the decision of an international court established with strong support from the member states of the European Union."
He pointed out that when the court decided to issue an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin, many countries expressed their support for the decision at the time, but today some of those countries remain silent regarding the decision to arrest Netanyahu.
"As Vice-President of the European Commission and High Representative of the Union, I call on member states to support the International Criminal Court," he added.
He stressed that the EU member states are obliged to implement the court's decision.
On Thursday, the court issued two international arrest warrants against Netanyahu and Galant, on charges of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity during the ongoing genocide committed by Israel against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023.
On May 20, the International Criminal Court Prosecutor, Karim Khan, requested the issuance of arrest warrants against Netanyahu and Galant for their responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by the Israeli army in Gaza since October 7, 2023.
Khan also asked the court again last August to quickly issue arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Galant.
