Liverpool defeats City and crowns the Community Shield
Liverpool won the English Football Community Shield title, by defeating Manchester City 3-1 on Saturday evening, at the “King Power Stadium”.
Trent Alexander-Arnold (21), Mohamed Salah (83 penalty kicks) and Darwin Nunez (90 + 4) scored Liverpool's goals, compared to a goal scored by Julian Alvarez (70).
Liverpool started the match without any of its new players, as coach Jurgen Klopp relied on the same players he relied on last season, and Egyptian international Mohamed Salah led the team's attack alongside Roberto Firmino and Luis Diaz.
On the other hand, the Manchester City coach involved his new Norwegian striker, Erling Haaland, to play alongside Riyad Mahrez and Jack Grealish in the front line.
Liverpool started the match attacking, as captain Jordan Henderson passed a through ball to the Colombian Diaz on the right side, but City defender Robin Diaz stopped the latter's attempt in the third minute.
Salah almost opened the scoring in the fourth minute, when he skillfully overtook Joao Cancelo, before hitting the side netting from the outside.
Manchester City responded in the eighth minute, when Kevin De Bruyne picked up a rebound and hit it with his left hand, before it rebounded from Dutch defender Virgil van Dyck.
Alexander Arnold lifted a distinctive ball from the right, and Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson met it with his head, which did not find the way to the goal in the 14th minute.
Liverpool finally opened the scoring in the 21st minute, when the ball reached Salah, who turned it back to Arnold, so what was the last thing but to fire a court shot, which bounced off the far post and entered the goal.
Liverpool came close to scoring the second goal in the 26th minute, when Diaz's pass reached Firmino, who shot despite the harassment of City back Kyle Walker next to the goal.
Haaland was about to leave his first official match with City, when he got a pass from Bernardo Silva, and forcefully got rid of Robertson, before goalkeeper Adrian blocked his attempt in the 34th minute.
The remaining minutes of the first half passed, without real chances from both sides, until the last minute, when Adrian controlled Rodri's shot, City midfielder.
Adrian intervened again in the 47th minute, and saved a dangerous opportunity for Mahrez, who received a cunning pass from Rodri and hit a ball that hit the ground with his left hand, before the Spanish goalkeeper brilliantly removed it.
Guardiola realized that his team's attack needed to be strengthened on the wings, so he took out Grealish and Mahrez and involved Julian Alvarez and Phil Foden in their place.
Liverpool responded by involving Darwin Nunez in place of Firmino, and the Uruguayan striker almost scored a goal in the 64th minute, had it not been for the ingenuity of goalkeeper Ederson, who saved himself.
City finally managed to equalize in the 70th minute, when Foden received a pass from De Bruyne, and his attempt rebounded from goalkeeper Adrian, so that the ball would pass in front of Alvarez, who had no difficulty in depositing it, and the referee needed video technology in order to verify the validity of the goal.
But Liverpool returned to the air quickly, when the referee awarded him, with the help of video technology, a penalty kick, following a handball on Robin Diaz, and Salah executed the kick successfully in the 83rd minute.
Four minutes later, substitute James Milner lifted a ball from the right, which Nunez met with a header that settled next to the far post.
But Nunez managed to compensate in the fourth minute of stoppage time, when Salah lifted a ball from the right, Robertson met it with his head, hitting the Uruguayan striker with a close header in the net.
Halland hit Liverpool's crossbar in the seventh minute of stoppage time, after he followed a ball that was saved by goalkeeper Adrian.
