Kushner will not be part of the Trump administration, but will advise on the region

Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of US President-elect Donald Trump, will not return to the White House as part of the new administration, the Financial Times reported on Friday. The British newspaper, citing people familiar with the matter, said Kushner could offer advice on Middle East policy. Kushner, who is married to Ivanka Trump, has previously said he has no plans to change his life to refocus on politics, even if his father-in-law wins the White House race.

In March, Trump’s son-in-law suggested in a lecture he gave at Harvard University that Israel should do its utmost to move the people of Gaza to the Negev Desert or Egypt, and then enter these areas. He said that he would just “bulldozed something in the Negev” and get as many civilians out as possible by “opening something in the Negev, creating a safe zone there, moving the civilians out, and then entering and finishing the job would be the right move,” as he put it.

He added that Israel had “done more than other countries” to avoid civilian casualties, and that with “the right diplomacy” it might be possible to get Palestinians into Egypt. Asked about concerns that Palestinians who fled violence and hunger would not be allowed back into the territory, Kushner said: “There’s not much Gaza left anyway.”

Trump is preparing to assume a second presidential term after defeating Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the presidential race, and four years after losing the 2020 US presidential election to his rival Joe Biden, with him winning a number of key swing states in the country, most notably Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, and North Carolina.

Trump entered the 2024 US presidential election with a completely different strategy than he had in 2016. In the previous election, Trump’s reliance on his family and stars from outside and inside politics was his way to the White House. In 2024, it seems that Trump has become convinced that “some order” does no harm, and he has decided to return to real professionals and traditional faces specialized in leading election campaigns and making candidates successful. They ran a disciplined campaign that ultimately secured his return to the White House.

Trump entered this election amidst great tensions in the world, starting with the Ukraine war, passing through the Gaza war, and ending with the Israeli aggression on Lebanon. These are tensions that Biden was unable to reduce or mitigate, as Trump had previously called for, but he is able to stop them once he assumes the presidency.
