Mikati calls on the ceasefire monitoring committee to confront Israeli violations
Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati called on Tuesday on the committee monitoring the implementation of the ceasefire agreement to pressure Israel to stop its violations of the agreement and withdraw from the areas it has penetrated into in his country.
This came during his chairing of a committee meeting, according to a statement issued by the Lebanese Prime Minister's Office.
According to the statement, Mikati stressed, during the meeting, the "necessity of stopping Israeli violations and immediately withdrawing from the border areas where the Israeli army has penetrated in southern Lebanon."
He stressed that Lebanon is "committed" to the terms of the agreement, while "Israel continues its violations" of it, describing this as "unacceptable."
Mikati called on the committee monitoring the implementation of the agreement to "pressure Israel to implement the terms of the agreement, most notably withdrawing from the occupied territories and stopping the violations."
The meeting was attended by the Lebanese Army Commander, General Joseph Aoun, and the Chairman of the Ceasefire Monitoring Committee, US General Jasper Jeffers. The committee members included: French General Guillaume Ponchamp, Commander of the South Litani Sector in the Lebanese Army, Brigadier General Edgar Lowndes, and Commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), General Araldo Lazaro.
Since November 27, a fragile ceasefire has prevailed, ending the mutual shelling between Israel and Hezbollah that began on October 8, 2023, and then turned into a full-scale war on September 23.
Under the pretext of confronting "threats from Hezbollah," Israel committed 295 violations of the ceasefire in Lebanon until Tuesday evening, resulting in a total of 32 deaths and 38 injuries, according to a statistic by Anadolu Agency based on data from the Lebanese Ministry of Health.
The most prominent provisions of the ceasefire agreement include Israel's gradual withdrawal to the south of the Blue Line separating it from Lebanon within 60 days, and the deployment of Lebanese army and security forces along the border, crossing points, and the southern region.
Under the agreement, the Lebanese army will be the only entity allowed to carry weapons in the south of the country, with the dismantling of military infrastructure and sites, the confiscation of unauthorized weapons, and the establishment of a committee to oversee and help ensure the implementation of these obligations.
The Israeli aggression on Lebanon resulted in 4,063 deaths and 16,663 injuries, including a large number of children and women, in addition to the displacement of about 1,400,000 people. Most of the victims and displaced persons were recorded after the escalation of the aggression on September 23.
