Trump criticizes Biden for commuting death sentences of 37 prisoners
Donald Trump on Tuesday criticized Joe Biden's decision to commute the death sentences of 37 inmates issued by the US federal judiciary, weeks before the transfer of power from the Democratic president to his Republican successor who supports the death penalty, according to Agence France-Presse.
“Joe Biden just commuted the death sentences of 37 of our country’s worst killers,” the Republican billionaire wrote on his Truth Social platform. “When you realize what each of them did, you won’t believe he did it.”
"This step is meaningless. The relatives and friends of the victims are even more shocked. They can't believe what is happening!" he added.
Donald Trump's comments came after the outgoing president announced yesterday that he had commuted the death sentences issued by the federal judiciary against 37 of the 40 convicts.
Human rights organizations that moved weeks ago to convince Biden confirmed that “this is the largest number of death sentences that an American president has decided to commute in modern times.”
Those organizations feared that the executions would be carried out with the return of Donald Trump to the White House on January 20, as he is considered a strong supporter of this punishment.
During his election campaign, Trump called for expanding the scope of the application to include immigrants convicted of killing American citizens and people involved in drug and human trafficking.
