The Philadelphia Axis...an Israeli attempt to impose a new reality that would stifle the Gaza Strip

Abu Ghosh: Israel aims to control the Gaza Strip from four sides and isolate it from the world
Al-Jarbawi: Egypt does not accept to deal with any new reality that Israel is trying to impose
Yaghi: The Netanyahu government wants a direct or indirect occupation with American assistance
Ayoub: There is a need for a unified Palestinian position to overcome any change to the 2005 agreement

Days have passed since Israel claimed that it took control of the Philadelphia axis, which includes the Rafah crossing, and extends over an area of 14 kilometers along the southern border of the Gaza Strip with the Republic of Egypt, which raises questions about the consequences of control and where the goals are headed.

Political writers and analysts believe, in separate conversations with Al-Quds.com, that Israel’s claim to control the Philadelphia axis in order to thwart the smuggling of weapons to the resistance and destroy the tunnels does not mean that it has taken complete control and achieved its goals, but other reasons lie behind the declaration, which is tightening geographical control. And authoritarianism over civilians in the future.

Writer and political analyst Nihad Abu Ghosh explains that Israel claims control over the axis to prevent arms smuggling and cooperation with the resistance, and claims control over the extended tunnels, despite their complexity and depth, stressing that discovering and thwarting arms smuggling through these tunnels is not an easy matter.

Abu Ghosh says: “Through these measures, Israel aims to control Gaza from four sides and separate it from the world, to tighten the noose and control the future of Gaza on the civil, authoritarian and military levels. Its plan includes controlling the eastern and northern sides and the sea, and now the Philadelphia axis, to cut Gaza’s ties to the world.” External.

Abu Ghosh adds: “All of this is taking place in parallel with attempts to displace the population of Gaza. Although talk about displacement has stopped now, attempts are continuing in light of the closure of the Strip from all sides, paving the way for displacement operations by various means, and Israel aims, through these plans, to control Gaza.” During the next ten years, whether on the resistance or civilians, however, Israel cannot decide alone, as the Palestinian people and the Arab depth exist.”

Regarding Egypt’s role in light of Israeli control over the Philadelphia axis, Abu Ghosh confirms that Egypt opposes these Israeli policies, but it has its own policies, and we as Palestinians are indispensable to Egypt, which is committed to the rights of the Palestinian people, and we hope that it will have a more effective role in preventing the tightening of the screws. On the Gaza Strip, and we look forward to the development of the Egyptian role, even if it comes to threatening to sever relations with Israel.

For his part, writer and political analyst Dr. Ali Al-Jarbawi: “By controlling the Philadelphia axis, Israel seeks to complete its control over the Gaza Strip and its borders with Egypt, and this has been its goal since the beginning of the war on the Strip.”
Al-Jarbawi points out that Egypt does not accept dealing with any new reality, because the Rafah crossing is a Palestinian-Egyptian crossing, and there was an agreement with the Europeans in 2005 stipulating that Israel would have a role in supervision and monitoring, but without control.

He points out that there is an attempt to find a formula to reopen the Rafah crossing, as the Europeans have reactivated the 2005 agreement and are holding talks with Israel, and talks are also taking place between Israel, America and Egypt to find a formula to operate the crossing, so that Israel does not control it.

He explains that “the Rafah crossing is located within the border between Egypt and the Gaza Strip over a length of 14 kilometers, and that Israel is trying to control the entire southern border of the Gaza Strip and separate it from Egypt, claiming that the border is not secure and that weapons are smuggled through it, and that there are tunnels, and it claims that this is to ensure its security.” "What's the need for her to be there?"

According to Al-Jarbawi, “The existence of Israel, as it is still the occupying power in terms of its legal status, has not abandoned the occupation of the Gaza Strip, and the fact that it is an occupying power does not mean that it has the right in this context.”

Al-Jarbawi asserts that “everything that is happening depends on any agreement that ends the war, especially since the Hamas movement requires in order to conclude any exchange deal that Israel completely withdraw from the Gaza Strip, and matters are still under discussion and their features are not clear, and all of that is dependent on the agreement that will end the war.”

For his part, writer and political analyst Firas Yaghi points out that controlling the Philadelphia axis is part of an Israeli military strategy aimed at besieging the Gaza Strip and cutting off its communication with the outside world, in addition to trying to cut off supplies to the resistance.

He points out that "Israel claims the existence of tunnels on the Philadelphia axis despite Egyptian denials, and there are several checkpoints on the border, while Israel has accused Egypt of facilitating the digging of tunnels. Therefore, Israel is trying to pressure the Egyptian side to accept the fait accompli, according to its vision, and Egypt refuses." that".

Yaghi asserts that Israel failed in its attempt to displace the people of the Gaza Strip across the Egyptian border to Sinai due to the refusal of Egypt and the Arab countries and the steadfastness of the people of Gaza, and after its failure in that, it is trying by various means to repeat this scenario.
Yaghi points out that the future is unclear. According to the vision of the Netanyahu government, it will only happen through the occupation of the Gaza Strip, directly or indirectly, amid American attempts to bend anything to the benefit of Israel.

For his part, Professor of Political Science at An-Najah University, writer and political analyst Dr. Hassan Ayoub: “After US President Joe Biden’s speech about the future of Gaza, the most likely scenario is that Israel seeks to establish an Israeli military reality on the Philadelphia axis and the Rafah crossing, which may change the agreement that existed in 2005.”

Ayoub stresses the necessity of a unified Palestinian position to overcome any possible agreement at the Rafah crossing and the Philadelphia axis, stressing that the lack of agreement may lead to the continuation of the status quo, urging an agreed-upon position between Hamas and the Palestinian Authority without any bidding from any party.

Ayoub also stresses the necessity of having a Palestinian national consensus government, and activating the role of the Liberation Organization and the institutions of the Authority, stressing that Israel does not want to see the Palestinian people, but things are not dependent on its will alone, and there must be agreement on the governance of Gaza between the Hamas movement and the Palestinian Authority, while emphasizing that The Palestinians are the ones who will manage the affairs of the Gaza Strip.

Under the “Philadelphia Agreement,” which Israel signed with Egypt in 2005 after its withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, and which Tel Aviv considers a security annex to the “Camp David” Accords, Israel withdrew from the axis separating Gaza and Egypt, and connected it with the Rafah crossing to the Palestinian Authority.

In 2007, Hamas took control of Gaza, and the Philadelphia axis and the crossing came under its control, while Israel imposed a stifling siege on the Strip.

On May 7, Israel took control of the Palestinian side with the Rafah border crossing with Egypt after a military operation that ignored all international calls. Cairo responded by refusing to coordinate with Tel Aviv regarding the crossing, and accused it of causing a humanitarian catastrophe in the Strip, while Israel claimed a few days ago that it had taken control.
