Hebrew media expects Israeli cabinet to approve prisoner swap deal on Tuesday

The Israeli Broadcasting Corporation reported on Monday that the security cabinet (the cabinet) is likely to convene tomorrow, Tuesday, "to ratify the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip and the prisoner exchange agreement with Hamas."

The official body said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wants to ensure that his "close partner" Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich will not bring down the government over his opposition to the deal.

She stressed that the chance of this happening is "very weak", as Netanyahu has a "clear majority" within the government to pass the deal despite the opposition of Smotrich, who described it as a "disaster", as well as National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.

According to the authority: "If things move quickly today, it is likely that the cabinet will meet tomorrow afternoon (Tuesday), followed by a government meeting, to ratify the deal."

On Monday, there were increasing claims in Israel about the imminent conclusion of the agreement, as the Hebrew Channel 12 (private) quoted unnamed Israeli sources as saying that “the details of the deal to release the hostages have been agreed upon, and now we are waiting for the final response from Hamas.”

Tel Aviv is holding more than 10,300 Palestinians in its prisons, while it estimates that there are 99 Israeli prisoners in Gaza, while Hamas announced the killing of dozens of its prisoners in random Israeli raids.

For its part, the private Israeli Channel 12 claimed on Tuesday that "there is a large majority in the government that agrees to the deal."

She also claimed that Netanyahu and the ministers of the Likud party led by him (18 members), the ministers of the Shas party (6), the ministers of United Torah Judaism (2) and the ministers of the National Right (2) would support the deal.

On the other hand, the ministers of Otzma Yehudit (3) and the ministers of Religious Zionism (3) stand against the deal, according to the same source.

She said Netanyahu met with Smotrich earlier on Monday and tried to entice him to give him a free hand in the issue of building settlements in the West Bank, in order to remain in the government if the deal was approved.

Earlier Monday, Smotrich's party announced that it had decided to oppose the proposed deal, but did not threaten to resign from the government if it was approved.

The Hebrew newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth said that there is another person who did not threaten, as he always did in the past, to resign from the government if the deal was passed, and that is Ben Gvir, who heads the Otzma Yehudit party.

Over the past weeks, mediators have intensified their efforts to hold indirect meetings between Hamas and Israel, which has led to "significant progress in the negotiations," with the details of the deal now nearly 90 percent complete, according to Hebrew media.
