Qatar hands Israel, Hamas 'final draft' of ceasefire, prisoner swap
Qatar has handed Israel and Hamas a "final draft" of a ceasefire and prisoner release aimed at ending the war in Gaza, an official familiar with the prisoner swap negotiations in Doha said Monday.
He added that his breakthrough was achieved in Doha, after midnight, after talks between the heads of the Israeli intelligence services and President-elect Donald Trump's envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, and the Qatari Prime Minister, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, according to what Reuters quoted him as saying.
The White House announced that US President Joe Biden spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu yesterday, Sunday.
The White House said in a statement that Biden and Netanyahu discussed ongoing efforts to reach an agreement to stop the fighting in the Gaza Strip and exchange prisoners, and that Biden "emphasized the immediate need for a ceasefire in Gaza and the return of the hostages, while increasing humanitarian assistance made possible by the cessation of fighting under the agreement."
Trump administration officials have told Israeli officials in recent days that Trump wants as much calm as possible in the Middle East so he can focus on domestic American issues.
In this context, according to Israeli Channel 12, Trump administration officials advised Israel to refrain from making offensive statements against the new administration in Syria in order to prevent internal tension and pressure in Syria. They reported that the new commander in Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa, is not interested, at least now, in a confrontation with Israel.
Trump administration officials have conveyed a similar message to Israel regarding Lebanon, saying that Trump is interested in a sustained ceasefire and does not want to hear that gunfire has resumed on Israel's northern border.
They explained that Trump does not want to be preoccupied at the beginning of his term with new wars or deepening old wars in the Middle East.
Witkov, who arrived in Israel on Saturday, met with Netanyahu with the aim of advancing a prisoner exchange deal, after which it was decided to send the heads of Mossad and Shin Bet to Doha, according to the channel.
The channel quoted an Israeli source as saying that in the last two days, Trump began to intervene in the prisoner exchange issue "personally", and that he is interested in reaching an agreement before the start of his term, on January 20.
"This is the most important mission for President Trump," Witkov said in an interview with the same channel about Trump's involvement in the prisoner exchange deal.
The president has personally instructed me to exert maximum pressure to push the deal through.”
"The president prefers a diplomatic solution, but if that doesn't happen, as the president has said, there will be serious consequences," Witkoff added.
According to Channel 12, it is not certain that a finalized and signed deal will be reached, but perhaps a memorandum of understanding or principles will be reached that Israel and Hamas will adhere to, "which may constitute an achievement with Trump's entry into the White House."
