The Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, woke up early on Sunday to the sound of violent explosions that rocked the city, resulting from a large-scale ballistic missile attack. Local authorities and the Ukrainian army confirmed that air defenses intercepted several targets in the capital's skies, warning residents not to leave shelters until the air raid alert ended.
For his part, Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, reported via social media platforms that air defense units engaged in direct combat with the attacking missiles. Successive explosions were heard in various areas, causing panic among civilians who sought refuge in metro stations and fortified basements.
Regarding human casualties, the past twenty-four hours saw victims in various Ukrainian regions due to intense Russian airstrikes. Two people were killed in the Dnipropetrovsk and Sumy regions, following the targeting of facilities and residential areas with a barrage of fire and guided missiles.
In contrast, Ukrainian counter-attacks did not cease, with shelling reaching the cities of Volgograd and Belgorod deep inside Russian territory, as well as the city of Horlivka in the Donetsk region. These operations resulted in the deaths of at least three people, according to statements from pro-Moscow regional authorities in those areas.
In a significant field development, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced its success in intercepting and destroying 124 Ukrainian drones within a period of no more than 12 hours. Sources clarified that these drones were targeting vital facilities in several Russian regions, in a Ukrainian attempt to expand the scope of military response.
The Russian capital, Moscow, was also a target of these attacks, with Sergei Sobyanin, its mayor, announcing the interception of a series of kamikaze drones. Initial statistics indicate that about 24 drones attempting to penetrate the Russian capital's airspace and strike strategic targets were shot down.
In the border region of Bryansk, acting governor Yegor Kovalchuk reported the deaths of two civilians who were in a private vehicle near the border. The incident occurred as a result of a direct attack by a Ukrainian drone targeting the border village, highlighting the escalating risks to civilians in areas adjacent to the fighting.
In southeastern Ukraine, the town of Nikopol was subjected to more than 40 airstrikes and concentrated Russian artillery shelling, resulting in one person killed and others injured. This town holds significant strategic importance and extreme sensitivity due to its location opposite the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which is currently under Russian control.
In the Donetsk region, Denis Pushilin, the Russian-appointed official, confirmed two deaths in the towns of Horlivka and Makiivka as a result of Ukrainian drone strikes. These cities are major urban centers experiencing ongoing conflict and mutual shelling, increasing the suffering of local residents.
This new wave of escalation comes within the framework of the ongoing war of attrition since February 2022, where mutual airstrikes have become a daily feature of the conflict. While Russia continues to bomb Ukrainian infrastructure, Kyiv intensifies its operations deep inside Russia in what it describes as a legitimate retaliatory response to aggression.
Air defense forces are operating in the capital, immediately take shelter to ensure your safety.
