In a related political and military context, a joint statement was issued by the head of the occupation government, Benjamin Netanyahu, and his security minister, Israel Katz, in which they claimed to have carried out a direct attack targeting Muhammad Awda. The statement claimed that Awda is the new general commander of the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Hamas movement, which places the field situation in the Strip before open possibilities for escalation during the Eid days.
