Talking about American promises has become meaningless

An attack on Russia's fleet in the Black Sea and US military aid to Kiev

Kiev (Ukraine) (AFP) - A drone attack blamed on Ukrainian forces on Saturday targeted the headquarters of Russia's Black Sea fleet, a day after the Pentagon announced new $775 million in military aid to Kiev aimed at turning the tide of fighting.

The attack took place on Saturday in Sebastopol, without causing any injuries, according to the governor of the city located in the Crimean peninsula, Mikhail Razvozgaev.

"The drone was shot down over the headquarters of the fleet, fell on the roof and caught fire," Razvozgaev said in a message via Telegram.

The accident did not cause "extreme damage" or injuries, according to what the governor said, holding the Ukrainian forces responsible for the operation.

It was the second attack targeting the headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in Sebastopol in less than a month.

It comes after the Pentagon announced on Friday a new $775 million military aid package for Ukraine, with the aim of helping Kiev reverse the equation on the ground and restore the lands occupied by Russian forces since the invasion began on February 24.

A senior Pentagon official told reporters that the new aid includes precision missiles, anti-tank weapons, reconnaissance drones, artillery and mine-clearing equipment, which could augment Ukrainian attacks.

"You see a complete and complete lack of Russian progress on the battlefield," said the official, who requested anonymity.

This 19th package of aid since the start of the war comes at a time when the battles show the Ukrainian forces' use of precision guided weapons supplied by the allies with the aim of carrying out strikes in remote locations behind enemy lines, in addition to their destruction of dozens of weapons depots and Russian command centers since mid-June.

Recently, a Russian airport and other facilities deep in Crimea were severely damaged. This week, a weapons depot exploded about 50 kilometers (30 miles) inside the Russian province of Belgorod.

The new aid package includes HIMARS missiles, which the Ukrainians are using to strike Russian weapons depots, and air-to-surface Harm anti-radar missiles.

It also includes 15 Sky Eagle reconnaissance drones, 1,000 Javelin anti-tank missiles, 1,500 TOW missiles, and new artillery with ammunition.

On the other hand, Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed on Friday that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) send a mission to Ukraine's Zaporizhia nuclear plant, the largest in Europe.

"The systematic bombing of the area of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant raises the risk of a large-scale catastrophe that could lead to radioactive contamination of vast areas," Putin warned, during a phone call with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron.

The two presidents stressed "the importance of sending a mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency to the nuclear plant as soon as possible, to assess the situation on the ground," according to what the Kremlin confirmed, pointing out that "the Russian side confirmed its readiness to provide all necessary support to the agency's inspectors."

At the same time, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, called on Russia on Friday, during a visit to Ukraine, not to cut off the Zaporizhia station, which it controls in the south of the country, from the Ukrainian electricity network, at a time when Kiev and Moscow are exchanging accusations of bombing the site.

On Thursday, Guterres considered, during a visit to the city of Lviv in western Ukraine, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, that "any damage to the Zaporizhya station would be tantamount to suicide," calling once again to make the station, which is occupied by the Russian army, a "demilitarized" zone.

Zelinsky considered that "the full restoration of security" at this site "could begin after the mission begins its work."

In his daily message on Friday evening, Zelensky said that "this summer will go down in the history of many European countries as one of the most tragic ever."

Economically, the credit rating agency "Standard & Poor's" decided to raise Ukraine's credit rating on Friday, after creditors granted it a two-year exemption last week from paying off its foreign debts.

S&P Global (S&P) said in a statement that raising the external debt credit score to CCC+ reflects Ukraine's "strong international financial support commitment, coupled with dwindling foreign exchange reserves although still relatively high." ".

"As a result, the near-term risks to the government's liquidity position and, more broadly, its ability to meet its commercial debt, including in foreign currencies, appear manageable," she added.

But S&P said that the move complicates a similar decision taken by Fitch Agency, based on the assumption that the United States and the European Union will continue financing Kiev in the coming months.

A loan agreement with the International Monetary Fund could ease pressure on Ukraine.

S&P expects the country's economy to contract by 40 percent this year.

According to a report published on the Hebrew website Ynet, many attempts have been thwarted recently with the help of an underwater smuggling detection system, and with the use of new ships.

According to the site, Hamas could have resorted to using these weapons if it joined the last round of fighting.

And it helps in setting up ambushes after any intelligence information, and it sails at a speed of up to 90 km per hour, and it is equipped with a machine gun, and a new system for advanced surveillance and thermal detection even at night, and it has a length of 10 meters, and it is more stable and allows for accurate and deadly shooting.

A senior officer said, "The new Hornet is excellent, and gives soldiers maneuverability in evading threats and rapid closure of any event detected on the radar, and it also represents a rapid backup force in the event of a malfunction in an operational event."

The UAE arrests the head of a major human smuggling network in Sudan

Dubai - (AFP) - The UAE announced Thursday that it led a large-scale international police operation in Sudan that led to the arrest of the head of a large human smuggling network.

An Eritrean citizen named "Kidan Zakarias Habet Mariam, known as "Kidan" was arrested on January 1 in Sudan, and he is wanted on charges including smuggling of migrants, human trafficking and others.

Kidane was arrested in Ethiopia in 2020, but he escaped after one year, after which he was sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment.

According to Interpol, Kidane "is wanted for his leadership of a criminal organization that, over several years, kidnapped, abused and extorted migrants from East Africa to smuggle them to Europe."

It is estimated that Kidane trafficked "hundreds of victims".

With the help of Interpol, the UAE authorities launched an investigation last year targeting Kidan's network, including his brother, who "laundered money on his behalf," noting that these financial transactions "enabled the officers to locate Kidan in Sudan."

Sudanese police arrested Kidan in Sudan on January 1, in coordination with the UAE authorities, according to Brigadier General Saeed Abdullah Al-Suwaidi, director general of the UAE's Federal Drug Control Department.

"We have now closed one of the most important smuggling routes to Europe, which illegally transported thousands of migrants from Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia and Sudan via Libya to Europe," the statement quoted Al-Suwaidi as saying.

Al Suwaidi told reporters that Kidan will now be tried in the UAE on charges of money laundering, and the authorities will consider the possibility of extraditing him after the case is closed in the country.

Al-Suwaidi stressed that this is "just the beginning" in pursuing the Habet Maryam network, and that his country is discussing with Interpol the possibility of launching another investigation into a major smuggling network.

For his part, Stephen Kavanagh, Executive Director of Police Services at Interpol, said Kidane is one of the most "wanted" criminals in the Netherlands, Ethiopia and other countries.

Kavanagh expressed his gratitude to the authorities of the UAE, Ethiopia, the Netherlands and Sudan, who he said had played a "decisive role" in the case.

The United Nations is sounding the alarm to prevent an oil spill in the Red Sea

Geneva, (AFP) - The United Nations on Tuesday sounded the alarm to raise $14 million to complete the amount needed to prevent the abandoned Safer oil tanker from sinking off the coast of Yemen and an oil spill that would cost $20 billion to clean up.

"We lack less than $14 million to raise the targeted $80 million and start an emergency operation to transfer oil from Safer to a safe ship," said Russell Geiki, advisor to the United Nations Coordinator in Yemen, at a regular briefing to the organization in Geneva.

"The operation cannot be carried out without obtaining the necessary funds," Geki warned, noting that among the 66 million already promised by different donors, only ten million have been collected so far, while the ship could break or explode "at any moment." ".

"The currents and strong winds, between October and December, increase the risk of a disaster, and if we do not act, the ship will break and there will be a disaster. It is only a matter of time," he said.

The oil spill, if it occurs, will be the fifth worst spill caused by a tanker, according to the UN official, noting that "the clean-up process alone will cost $20 billion."

The total cost is estimated at $144 million, including the calculation of the second phase, which requires the replacement of "Safer" with a safe and permanent solution.

The United Nations remains committed to seeking to reduce the overall cost.

Safer, loaded with about one million barrels of oil, is moored close to the coast of Hodeidah (west), and its explosion or any leakage from it could cause one of the most dangerous oil spill disasters in history, according to a study conducted by the Greenpeace research laboratories.

The tanker, which was manufactured 45 years ago and is used as a floating storage platform, has not undergone any maintenance since 2015, which led to the erosion of its structure and the deterioration of its condition, that is, since the start of the conflict in Yemen between the authority and the Houthi rebels who control the port.

The United Nations said it contained four times the amount of oil that was spilled in the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster, one of the world's worst environmental disasters that polluted Alaskan waters.

The non-governmental organization Greenpeace called on Arab countries to act "before it is too late."

It said the tanker threatened not only "the population of Yemen and neighboring countries," but also "the region's fragile ecosystems, particularly the unique biodiversity of the Red Sea."

Hamas: The Cabinet's decision reveals the fascist and racist face of the occupation government

Gaza - "Jerusalem" dot com - "Hamas" movement said, on Monday, that the decision of the so-called "Israeli Cabinet " to legalize settlement outposts in the West Bank shows once again the fascist and racist face of the occupation government that has not stopped its violations and crimes against the Palestinian people, their land and their sanctities. It shows its defiance and disregard for the international community and UN resolutions that have always affirmed the illegality of settlement activity and demanded its cessation.

Hamas called on the Palestinians and the forces and factions to resist the settlement policies of the occupation by all means, calling on the Arab and Islamic nation and free people of the world to support and strengthen the steadfastness of the Palestinian people in preserving their land and sanctities, activating the boycott of this occupied entity, and prosecuting its leaders who have a record of criminality before international courts, as a victory for justice. Subway stations are a haven for people fleeing the heat in China

Chongqing ( China ), (AFP) - To escape the heat in light of the heat exceeding 42 degrees Celsius, residents of Chongqing in southwestern China, a province suffering severely from the consequences of an unprecedented heat wave hitting the country, resort to air-conditioned corridors at stations metro .

Several regions in the southern half of the country are currently witnessing the strongest heat wave since national average temperatures began to be recorded in the 1960s.

The heat wave causes rivers to dry up and contributes to a decrease in the production of hydroelectric power plants.

The situation has prompted the authorities to ration electricity, particularly by closing factories and reducing public lighting.

In Chongqing, one of the hardest-hit cities, mostly elderly residents flee the stifling daytime heat towards subway stations to take a nap, read or play cards.

They sit on benches, cardboard boxes, or overturned buckets, among them a number of resting maintenance workers or laborers, and others are neighborhood residents or unemployed retirees.

The recent discovery of a new cluster of coronavirus in the province of 32 million people has led to mandatory testing for 10 million of them. But on the subway, few people wear masks.

And around them, the crowd of travelers spread in the corridors continues to move to and from the place of work, indicating the continuation of the wheel of economic life despite the heat wave.

And near the entrance to the subway, in a crowded supermarket, some residents also come to look for a little refreshment.

With a smile on his face, one of the managers explains that many of those who go to metro stations have air conditioners at home, but they feel bored and prefer to come and chat with their friends in a quiet atmosphere.

Climate experts say that the intensity, scope and time span of this heat wave are elements that may make it one of the largest heat waves ever recorded.

Denmark will invest more than five billion euros in its naval fleet

Copenhagen - (AFP) - Denmark's Defense Minister Morten Budeskov announced Thursday that Denmark will invest 40 billion Danish crowns (5.38 billion euros) in its navy over the next two decades to strengthen and renew its fleet in the new framework after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The minister told the press, when offering a partnership with specialized parties in this industry, that the Scandinavian country intends to build its ships.
"We are facing a serious situation in Europe. There is a war in Europe. We have just come out of the Covid epidemic and the common point between (the two crises) is that they caused problems to ensure our supplies," he said.

He did not say how many ships would be built in the next two decades, but said many ships were aging and needed to be replaced.
He added that "a large part of our fleet" includes patrol boats, small boats that carry out rescue operations near the coast, inspection ships and frigates.

The National Office: The occupation is implementing settlement projects over the waters of the Dead Sea under the banner of tourism

Nablus - "Jerusalem" dot com - Imad Saadeh - The National Bureau for Defending the Land and Resisting Settlement said that the occupation's violations of all international laws and norms know no borders, neither in time nor in space, as they cover the entire West Bank , and extend to the Dead Sea , which It is located on its eastern outskirts, with a total area of about (950 km), of which about (600 km) is in the part occupied in 1967.

He explained that this sea contains 28 types of salts and minerals, the most important of which are chlorine, bromine, sodium, phosphate and calcium.

The occupation authorities spare no effort except for the sake of more control over the Palestinian land and the Palestinian space, through settlement projects that take many forms and do not exclude one of the governorates or one of the regions in the West Bank, including the Dead Sea, sometimes with housing projects and other times with tourism development projects. Spend hundreds of millions of dollars on them, and settle me on the northern shores of the Dead Sea.

It is not satisfied with seeking to control large areas of land that resulted from the receding of the Dead Sea waters, and it is located within the Palestinian territories occupied in 1967, but rather extends its control plans with tourism projects in the remaining areas of the sea.

It is noteworthy that several settlements have been established by Israel in the areas north of the Dead Sea, and millions have been spent on them in building infrastructure and various facilities that attract settlements in the occupied Palestinian Jordan Valley.

And the Dead Sea annually loses areas of land that are flooded with water, due to the policy of the Israeli government that reserves the sources that feed the sea, for the benefit of the settlements and settlers, whether in the lands it occupied in 1948 or the lands it occupied in 1967.

These lands are transformed by the occupation authorities into state lands and considered a vital area for settlement in the future, and the rest of the area flooded with water from the sea, which the occupation authorities plan to control through settlement projects in the color of tourism.

Here, and in continuation of the policy of the occupation government based on settlements, Judaization and robbery of the capabilities and natural wealth of the Palestinian people, and as a continuation of similar projects that it previously completed, the Israeli occupation authorities intend to inaugurate a series of hotels in the Dead Sea similar to the Maldives, and in the form of a new "Riviera" in the Middle East, as they claim. , where Israel plans to initially launch a 200-room floating hotel on the water.

The occupation government has conducted a tender to inaugurate these hotels in the Dead Sea, and Barclays won it, and it is supposed to build a tourist riviera in the Dead Sea, very similar to the global Maldives, and it is expected that the construction process will take at least 4 years, and it is worth mentioning That the Israeli investment projects and the Dead Sea factories contribute to the destruction of Palestinian natural resources, and environmental experts have warned that the Israeli investment policies and projects will lead to the drying up of the Dead Sea, in light of the decrease in the sea level at a rate of one and a half meters annually, and its area has shrunk by 35 percent in four years. contracts.

Jerusalem in the crosshairs of settlement projects

As for occupied Jerusalem, it is still in the midst of escalation and settlement and Judaization projects that do not stop, and take an upward turn with each new Israeli election for the Knesset in the context of competition between large and small Zionist parties.

This is evident from the intensity of these projects adopted by the occupation authorities, the municipality of Moshe Lion, and settlement associations, especially the "Elad" association, which focuses its activities in the occupied city and governorate of Jerusalem. Despite the opposition of the international community, private Israeli companies, the Ministry of Housing and Settlement, and the so-called "Israeli Land Authority" announced an agreement. A joint plan according to which 1,250 settlement units will be built on the southern slopes of the “Gilo” settlement, which is built on the lands of Beit Jala in the Bethlehem governorate.

This announcement comes within the framework of cooperation between "Ken Hathor" and "Epsilon" companies with the Ministry of Settlement and Housing and the (Israeli Land Authority), which said that the development of the southern slopes of the "Gilo" settlement neighborhood will be carried out, and the development will include the road network, infrastructure, public areas and parks. Commercial and employment areas, in addition to building a group of high-rise buildings, including 1,250 settlement units at the bottom of the southern slopes, including 27 buildings from 9 to 13 floors.

As for the second part of the project, it will include 4 settlement towers, each with 20 to 24 floors, on top of those heights that overlook the mountains of the southern West Bank. Public areas, gardens, and commercial and employment areas southwest of the tunnels that connect Jerusalem to the settlement bloc "Gush Etzion".

In addition, the new plan is expected to add to the upper part of the complex a plan that includes hundreds of settlement units in 4 huge towers that will accommodate about 580 new settlement units within the next 4 years.

According to the companies that won the first bid, the project is in the stages of planning and coordination with all relevant authorities in the occupation municipality in Jerusalem and the local and district committees. It has reached an advanced stage and has obtained most of the approvals. The subsidiary company “Ken Hathor” is promoting a series of projects and accompanying settlement complexes. and supportive.

Hundreds of settlement units near Beit Safafa
At the same time, the National Building Committee in occupied Jerusalem is expected to approve, next week, the construction of hundreds of settlement units near the Jerusalem neighborhood of Beit Safafa, despite the American opposition to that. A settlement neighborhood near Beit Safafa in Jerusalem, where the National Building Committee will hold its meeting next week for approval.

It was also revealed that a project was launched to establish 162 new settlement units in the "Ramat Shlomo" settlement built on the lands of Shuafat town in Jerusalem. An Israeli real estate group will build 162 settlement units and 3,325 square meters of commercial space in the settlement. The area was originally designated for public buildings in 2019 before being converted into a residential construction area, which will include 3 9-storey buildings above a two-storey shopping mall.

Also in the city of Jerusalem, the occupation municipality, in cooperation with an Israeli engineering company, began working on the construction of a 200-meter suspended tourist bridge for pedestrians over the lands of the Wadi al-Rababa neighborhood in the town of Silwan, south of the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque, under the pretext of facilitating the arrival of extremist settlers to the Al-Buraq Wall and the Mughrabi Gate.

The occupation municipality and the so-called Israeli "Nature Authority" began excavation work years ago in several areas of the lands of Wadi Al-Rababa to examine the soil, but the owners of the lands and the people of Silwan confronted them and prevented them from completing the excavation.

However, in 2020, the "local and district committees" in the occupation municipality agreed to start implementing the Judaization project after rejecting all the objections submitted by the landowners and the concerned institutions in Silwan to the occupation and municipal courts.

As usual, the "Elad" settlement association and the so-called "Jerusalem Development Authority" and the "Jerusalem Ministry" are supervising the construction of the Judaizing bridge. The neighborhood confirmed their ownership of the lands through the identification papers they owned.

In 2018, the Israeli "Peace Now" movement and the "Emek Sheveh" Foundation submitted a judicial petition to the "District Appeal Committee for Planning and Building" in occupied Jerusalem, to invalidate the plan to build the suspension bridge. The petition stated that the plan was moved in secret and without the knowledge of the public, and that the project It is for political purposes that serve the settlement in Jerusalem at the expense of the Palestinian neighborhoods and the important religious and historical values of Jerusalem.

Biblical garden south of Al-Aqsa Mosque
Also in Jerusalem, the far-right Minister of Jerusalem, Heritage and Housing, Ze’ev Elkin, inaugurated the (biblical archaeological) park southwest of the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque, at the bottom of the corner of the Islamic Museum - in the Umayyad palaces area.

It is known that this ministry and the Elad Settlement Association lead the efforts of the occupation government and its Judaization projects in Jerusalem in general, the Old City and the (Holy Basin) with total investments over the years of hundreds of millions of shekels.

The Ministry of Tourism in Israel also has a role in these settlement and Judaization projects by focusing on tourism projects in (the basin of the old city). Jewish religious attractions of ancient Jerusalem.

It is noteworthy that the “Holy Basin” is a loose expression for a Judaization project for the vicinity of the Old City that was launched in 1999. It extends from the Wadi Al-Rababa area in the town of Silwan, passing through the Al-Bustan and Wadi Hilweh neighborhoods in the town, then towards the Tantour Pharaoh area and the Jewish cemeteries on the slopes of the Mount of Olives. The project is about 2 kilometers, and the occupation exploits the religious issue to impose a political reality and Judaizing religious tourism in the place, in cooperation and partnership with settlement associations such as the "Laad" association and "Ateret Cohanim."

For the first time since the occupation of East Jerusalem in 1967, the southern wall of Al-Aqsa Mosque is being illuminated by the occupation, which prevents the entry of the Hashemite Endowments, Antiquities and Ages employees to it, and prevents the lighting of large parts of the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock.

This project is part of a new tourism project in Jerusalem, which will make it possible to experience the archaeological park, a complex adjacent to the prayer square in the Western Wall, and to connect western and eastern Jerusalem, bringing visitors to the historic basin, and it is a project within a series of projects, including the "air train" project and the The aerial bridge is 240 m long and 30 m high. It will start from al-Thawri neighborhood, passing through the lands of Wadi al-Rabayah, and reaching Salas to the Waqf of the Dajani family, southwest of Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Aerial and land paths, public gardens, and restaurants were uncovered in this huge project, with the aim of encouraging settlement tourism and bringing it to the heart of Palestinian neighborhoods to support settlement there. project feasible.

According to the occupation municipality, the project was inaugurated in a special launch ceremony, in the presence of the Minister of Housing, Jerusalem and Heritage, Knesset member Ze’ev Elkin, Minister of Tourism Yoel Razvozu, Mayor Moshe Lion, and Director of the Antiquities Authority, Eli Escouzido. The place was equipped with innovative lighting, with a special focus on corners. The lighting and the variable temperature of the light, according to the special shows illuminated in the place so that the southern wall of the illuminated Al-Aqsa Mosque can be seen from the chain of hills and mountains such as Jabal Al-Mukabber, Silwan, Abu Dis, Al-Sawahra and the distant Mandoub Palace.

The settlers' orgies increased
The settlers' rebellion and attacks against the Palestinians and their remaining lands and properties are escalating and accelerating. Settlers have called for the storming of the village of Nabi Samuel and its mosque, and the gathering in large numbers of up to 10,000 settlers.

Extremist Knesset member Itamar Ben Gvir led a provocative storming of the village of Nabi Samuel, with the participation of hundreds of settlers, and under the protection of the Israeli occupation forces, which intensified their deployment and checkpoints in the village and its surroundings, in anticipation of the event that the villagers will organize against the racist occupation policies and the restrictions imposed on them.

The village of Nabi Samuel is located northwest of occupied Jerusalem, next to an archaeological site of the same name, and was built on top of a hill around the mosque and the tomb that is attributed to the Prophet Samuel. The Palestinian village faces the siege of the occupation and its racist policies, after it was isolated from its surroundings by building the apartheid wall. The city of Jerusalem or the occupied West Bank, except with permits issued by the occupation authorities and its army.

The occupation prevents residents from building without permits, while the occupation authorities refuse to grant permits to citizens to build, develop and expand their homes.

Israel may soon start extracting gas from a disputed field with Lebanon

Jerusalem - (AFP) - Energy PLC, which works for Israel, announced that it is ready to start extracting gas from the Karish field , located in the eastern Mediterranean , within a few weeks, and is disputed between Lebanon and the Jewish state.

The United States has been mediating for two years between Lebanon and Israel, the two neighboring countries that are still officially at war, to reach an agreement that demarcates the maritime borders between them and removes obstacles to oil and gas exploration and extraction.
While Lebanon says that the Karish field is located in a part of the disputed waters with Israel, the Hebrew state says that the entire field is located in its exclusive economic zone.

Tensions between Israel and its neighbor escalated in June when a gas production and storage vessel chartered for the Hebrew state by the London-based Energy Plc company arrived in the disputed maritime area.

On Thursday, Energy plc said in a report on its first-half results that "our main project, Karish, is on its way to start production in a few weeks."

However, Hezbollah, the armed organization with great influence in Lebanon, has repeatedly warned the Hebrew state against carrying out any activity in Karish before reaching an agreement in this regard with Lebanon.

On the second of July, Israel said that it had intercepted three Hezbollah drones that were heading to the gas fields in the Mediterranean.

And on August 22, Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz warned that any Hezbollah attack on Karish could lead to a new war between the Jewish state and the party.

Gantz said at the time that gas extraction operations would begin "when (the field) is ready for production," stressing that the Karish field is located within the territorial waters of the Jewish state.

In 2006, Hezbollah, which enjoys great political influence in Lebanon, fought a bloody war against Israel that lasted 33 days.
Israel and Lebanon resumed negotiations on their maritime borders in 2020. These negotiations later stopped before resuming in June.

Initial discussions focused on a disputed 860 square kilometer area, according to Lebanon's claims registered with the United Nations in 2011.

Later, Lebanon requested that the area of this area be expanded to 1,430 square kilometers, to include the Karish field, which Israel considers to be within its exclusive economic zone.

Turkey accuses Greece of a "hostile act" against its aircraft

Istanbul - (AFP) - Turkey confirmed today, Sunday, that Turkish aircraft that were on a mission in the Aegean Sea and in the eastern Mediterranean were targeted by the S-300 air defense system of Greece, condemning it as a "hostile act."

The Greek air defense system, stationed on the island of Crete, "shut off" the sensors installed on the Turkish "F-16" aircraft, which were conducting a reconnaissance mission last Tuesday at an altitude of 10,000 feet west of the island of Rhodes, according to sources in the Turkish Ministry of Defense.

The sources confirmed that this step is equivalent to a "hostile act" according to the rules of engagement in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

However, the Turkish planes "carried out their mission and returned to their base safely."

However, sources in the Greek Ministry of Defense denied the Turkish accusations.

"The Greek S-300 air defense system never turned off the (sensors) of the Turkish F-16s," the public broadcaster ERT quoted the sources as saying.

Turkey has complained in recent months about actions by Greece, which it described as provocative and harmful to peace efforts.

Between the two neighboring NATO member states, disputes dating back to the past over sea and air borders prompt the Air Force to carry out patrols and interception missions at an almost daily pace, especially in the vicinity of the Greek islands near the Turkish coast.

Atina accuses Ankara of sending its planes to fly over the Greek islands.
For its part, Turkey asserts that Greece is massing soldiers on the islands of the Aegean Sea, in contravention of the peace treaties concluded after the two world wars.

Lebanon's banks announce a strike starting next Tuesday

The Association of Banks in Lebanon announced today (Thursday) a strike starting next Tuesday, in protest against the issuance of court rulings requiring the payment of deposits in foreign currency.

The association, which includes Lebanese banks, said in a statement after a meeting it held today that it "finds itself forced to return to the strike, starting on the morning of Tuesday, March 14," in light of the issuance of court rulings "obliging banks to accept the payment of their debts in foreign currency."

She explained, "Unfortunately (..) judicial decisions were issued during the past few days (..) obligating banks to accept the payment of debts belonging to them in foreign currency owed by borrowers by check drawn on the Central Bank of Lebanon or in Lebanese pounds based on the exchange rate of 1,500 pounds to one dollar."

And she continued, "Judicial decisions oblige banks to pay or transfer deposits in foreign currency in cash and in the same currency and for the benefit of some depositors at the expense of other depositors."

And the Association of Banks called for taking swift legal measures to put an end to this imbalance in adopting contradictory standards in issuing some rulings, which drain the remaining funds belonging to all depositors and not to some at the expense of others.

It called for "dealing with the crisis in a rational, just and final manner, in which the state, in particular, bears its responsibility in this field," holding "the official executive, monetary, judicial and legislative authorities responsible for finding a comprehensive solution to the existing crisis."

Since 2019, Lebanese banks have imposed harsh restrictions on withdrawing deposits in foreign currency, and set ceilings on withdrawing deposits in Lebanese pounds, while the government stopped paying its external and internal debts.

The Lebanese banks had announced a week ago the suspension of a strike that lasted for three weeks, in protest against the judicial summons of a number of bank managers.

Since 2019, Lebanon has been witnessing a severe financial and economic crisis, which was embodied in the scarcity of foreign currency, the collapse of the Lebanese pound, the high rate of poverty in the country, unemployment, inflation, and a shortage of fuel, medicine, and infant formula, and the World Bank classified it among the worst in the world in 150 years.

Britain launches legal action against its exclusion from European research programmes

London - (AFP) - Britain has launched legal measures against its exclusion from European scientific research programs, through a mechanism stipulated in the post-Brexit agreement, according to compatible sources Wednesday.

These measures are the first of their kind launched by Britain against the European Union since Brexit.

On Tuesday evening, the British government said in a statement that it had launched a mechanism "provided in the UK-EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement to resolve disputes between the two parties".

She explained that this action was taken due to "continued delays" in her access to EU science programmes.

Britain indicated that in 2020 it had negotiated access to Horizon Europe, the European Union's research and innovation programme, but the bloc "still refuses to complete" its inclusion in academic programmes.

The research is funded by Horizon Europe, the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom) and the European Earth observation programme, Copernicus.

"The European Union is clearly in breach of our agreement, by its continued attempt to politicize vital scientific cooperation and by its refusal to grant us access to these important programmes," Secretary of State Liz Terrace said in the statement.

The European Commission confirmed on Wednesday morning that it had received a letter from the British government on the matter.

"The Commission acknowledges receipt of the request for consultations from Britain and will follow up on it in accordance with the applicable rules set out in the" post-Brexit agreement, said Commission spokesman Daniel Phiri.

However, the day before, he indicated that this file was without "great difficulties", noting that the trade agreement does not oblige the European Union to involve Britain in these programs.

American experiments on mice may help solve mental problems in humans

RICHMOND (AFP) - After astonishing the world in 2019 with their ability to drive miniature cars, the American University of Richmond rats are part of a pioneering project exploring the role of environmental enrichment in shaping the brain, which could help in the long term to solve mental health problems in young people. Humans.

On a racetrack, Black Tail Rat spends a few seconds sniffing the place, before putting his legs on a winch and driving off at full speed -- and when he reaches his destination, he devours a well-deserved treat.

Kelly Lambert, director of the Behavioral Neuroscience Laboratory at the University of Richmond, said the experiment "draws people's attention to the intelligence and learning capacity of these animals."

Lambert considers that one of the greatest failures of modern medicine is its inability to treat mental illness with the help of drugs, despite the fact that pharmaceutical companies are making profits in this field.

These pharmacological approaches have come increasingly into question, after the publication of a major study in July that called into question the theory that chemical imbalances, particularly a lack of serotonin, would cause depression.

Instead, Kelly Lambert sees behavioral therapy as key to treating the mind, hence the small mammal study.

"Our brains change from womb to grave," she says, explaining that having an active life, one way or another, can affect the likelihood of depression.

In an earlier experiment, rats were divided into a first group of rodents that had to make an effort to get a reward - in this case digging in a mound of soil - and a control group in which rats had to get rewards for nothing.

Faced with stressful tasks, the first group of rats survived longer than those conditioned to survive in a state the scientists call "learned helplessness."

When forced to swim, the first group rats had a hormonal reaction that indicated greater emotional resilience.
Rats that learned to drive also showed greater emotional cohesion and lower levels of stress, which may be related to satisfaction with learning new skills, according to Kelly Lambert.

Researcher Olivia Harding says that these animals "make paths in nature that they take all the time, and we wanted to see if they were able to maintain this excellent sense of direction inside a vehicle."

Learning wasn't easy: the mice first had to actuate the controls by clicking their snouts, before the scientists discovered that they preferred standing on their hind legs and using their front legs to drive.

Even when the vehicle was in an unfamiliar situation, the rodents were able to steer it the right way and get the treats, evidence of their advanced cognitive ability.

In this experiment, the so-called "black-tailed" and "multi-colored-tailed" rats showed an ability to "anticipate" by fidgeting when humans arrived and sprinting in an attempt to climb cage walls.

Just like humans, not all rats have the same interests: while some seem to enjoy driving themselves, others do so just for the rewards, and a third group don't even care.

Scientists have long ignored female mice, believing that their four-day menstrual cycle could change the results of research, thus depriving themselves of in-depth knowledge about them.

This phenomenon Kelly Lambert has worked to combat in her own experiences, while the federal conditions for receiving funds to conduct research in the United States, encourage to follow her example.

The director of the Behavioral Neuroscience Laboratory realized early in her career that studying mice living in cages with environmental "unenrichment"—without obstacle races or activities—didn't hold as much interest as studying confined humans.
For example, rats raised in cages without environmental enrichment were more successful at driving a car than others.
Her latest research concluded that wild mice have larger brains than laboratory rats, more neurons, a larger spleen for better disease fighting, and much higher stress levels.
Which leads us to a philosophical question: Are we more like lab rats, caged animals with environmental enrichment, or wild animals?
"I feel a little more like a lab rat than a wild rat," Kelly Lambert laughs.
Wild rats that have to scavenge for food in the garbage every day and avoid predators may have behavior similar to that of our ancestors, and humans can draw lessons from them in terms of mental resistance.

Turkish restaurants launch a solidarity campaign to help the homeless as a result of the earthquake

Gaziantep - (AFP) - Displaced Turks, displaced by the earthquake, line up in icy temperatures in Gaziantep to receive a hot meal served by restaurants as part of a solidarity campaign in this city in the south of the country.

"The queues are endless, but the restaurants offered much more than what the government did," said Agdi Gunes, one of the displaced.

At the Chadash Imam Restaurant in Gaziantep, about four thousand dishes have been distributed for free since the earthquake that has claimed the lives of 28,000 people in Turkey and Syria so far.

"We prepare easy-to-prepare and serve hot dishes to counter the cold, such as pasta and soup, since the morning," said Burhan Chadash, the son of the owner of the restaurant.

He added that the restaurant prepares four or five different dishes every day, noting that "if we do not have enough ingredients, other restaurants provide them for us. They know that it is about helping people in need."

Nearly 2,000 people were killed in the earthquake that struck Gaziantep, near the epicenter, and tens of thousands of residents were forced to leave their apartments, which are now considered unsafe.

Due to a lack of ingredients, Imam Chadash Restaurant is no longer able to serve the dishes it is famous for, but it still serves Turkish soup or tava, made from tomatoes, onions, meat and spices.

"Our staff find themselves in a very difficult situation. Their families have been victims and their homes have been destroyed," Chadash said. The family of Berhan Chadash himself has been sleeping in the cars since Monday.

But the wave of solidarity is stronger than all circumstances. "We want to help," Chadash explained.

Other restaurants and cafes in Gaziantep followed the example of Chadash Imam.

Every afternoon, hundreds of displaced people line up in front of Ferino, a trendy café at the foot of the Gaziantep Citadel, whose towers collapsed during the earthquake.

In the Kaleali restaurant, also located in the tourist district of Gaziantep, about three thousand soups are served daily with bread. "We will continue to do what we are doing as long as the crisis persists, even if it lasts for weeks," said the manager of the place, who also goes by the name of Burhan.

Even small businesses have joined the campaign. "We serve 200 kebabs a day," said Heder Nemacek, who runs a small kiosk selling kebabs with his wife in the Şahinbey district of Gaziantep.

In the park where families spend the nights in the cold, people who have been made homeless line up to get food. Cities across the country sent trucks full of food and water to the quake-affected areas.

"I stand in line once a day, but in order to have dinner with my children we are looking for a restaurant: the dishes served there are much better," said Deniz Erdoğlu, who lives in a tent with his wife and their four children.

Also, some sell their livestock to be able to help the displaced, like Sharigul Kachan, 70, who came from Kars province (east) and sold a cow for 13,000 Turkish liras (650 euros) to send money to the earthquake victims, according to Turkish media.

Like her, Nazima Kilic, who was a victim of the 1983 earthquake in Erzurum (east), sold her bull for 23,000 liras (1,145 euros). "I have eight children. I tell them: help as much as you can," she was quoted by Turkish media as saying.
