Hundreds of thousands demonstrate against the Netanyahu government for the twelfth consecutive week

Hundreds of thousands of Israelis demonstrated, Saturday evening, in Tel Aviv and several areas and crossroads in Israel, to protest the government of Benjamin Netanyahu and its plan to weaken the judiciary and undermine the Supreme Court, for the twelfth consecutive week.

More than two hundred thousand people participated in the main demonstration, which started from Habima Square in central Tel Aviv, towards Kaplan Street.

At the "Karkur" intersection in the Hadera area, the Israeli police assaulted the protesters, used water cannons to disperse them, and arrested four of them, after closing Road No. 65 to traffic.

Supporters of the "Likud Party" attacked the demonstrators against the government in the city, "Or Akiva" near Haifa, which is considered one of Netanyahu's strongholds.

Tens of thousands demonstrated in Haifa, Beersheba, Ashdod, Netanya, Herzliya and Raanana, and a massive demonstration took place in front of the residence of Israeli President Isaac Herzog in Jerusalem.

The Israeli police closed many streets, coinciding with the protest demonstrations.

The demonstrators demanded Netanyahu's resignation, and held up banners with slogans written in Hebrew, English and Arabic, including: "Palestinian lives matter," "A people occupying another people cannot be free," "Netanyahu, Smotrich, Ben Gvir, a threat to peace in the world," and “Yariv Levin (Justice Minister) is an enemy of democracy,” “It is time to bring down the dictator,” “The government of shame,” “Bibi (Netanyahu) is disqualified,” “Apartheid does not stop at the Green Line,” and “No one is above the law.” Levin's judicial reforms are the end of democracy.

The Netanyahu government seeks to make radical amendments to the judiciary and against minorities, and to legitimize "racism and discrimination," which a wide segment of Israelis considers "targeting democracy and undermining the judicial system."

Yesterday, Friday, the organizers of the protests against the Netanyahu government and the plan to weaken the judiciary announced that they would escalate their protest steps during the next week, following his statements and his emphasis on "continuing legislation in order to reform the judiciary," as he put it.

The organizers of the protests said in a statement they issued, "The current week will witness days of national paralysis and protest steps in front of members of Knesset and ministers in the government, in addition to organizing a mass demonstration in Jerusalem."

They added that "on Sunday and Monday, protests will be organized in every place where Knesset members and ministers are, until we paralyze their programs and deliver our message that the dictatorship will not pass."

They emphasized that "the pace of the protests will escalate on Tuesday, unlike what the country's streets witnessed in the previous days. Next Wednesday will witness paralysis and large protests in the morning hours, before the demonstrators then head to Jerusalem to participate in a large demonstration in front of the Knesset headquarters."

The organizers of the protests acknowledged that "there will be other protests on Thursday," but they refused to disclose them at the present time.

Protest organizers said that "the struggle will rise to another level, and the reason for this is Netanyahu's attempt next week to take control of the Supreme Court and appoint judges to rule blatantly, in light of the violation of the conflict of interest agreement and the decision of the Supreme Court and the judicial advisor to the government."

They pointed out that "we are entering a fateful week in the history of Israel, especially as the current government is tearing the people apart and dismantling the Israeli army and economy."

They added: "In the face of the attempt to turn Israel into a dictatorship, millions will take to the streets in order to defend it and its independence, and every Israeli who wants to live in democracy must take to the streets and oppose dictatorship at any cost and paralyze the state. We are not afraid of a long road, and our people will triumph and democracy will triumph."

Netanyahu said in a press conference held on Thursday that judicial legislation aimed at weakening the judiciary will continue next week, in violation of the conflict of interest agreement that prevents him from dealing with his government's judicial plan that would affect his trial on corruption charges.

The government's judicial advisor, Gali Bharav Mayara, sent a message to Netanyahu, warning him that his interference in the judicial coup was illegal, noting that he "violated the Supreme Court's decision, according to which, as a prime minister accused of felonies, he must refrain from taking steps that raise a reasonable suspicion of inconsistency."
