Israeli protesters, including soldiers, storm military court in Beit Lid
Chaos erupted inside the Beit Lid base in central Israel on Monday evening after dozens of right-wing demonstrators, including masked soldiers, stormed the military courthouse to protest the arrest of soldiers accused of sexually assaulting a prisoner from Gaza.
"Chaos after right-wing activists stormed the military court in Beit Lid," Israeli Army Radio said.
The radio broadcast a video clip showing right-wing protesters storming the military court and fighting with military police, who were unable to prevent the storming.
The Israeli Broadcasting Authority also published a video showing dozens of protesters trying to storm an iron gate inside the courthouse, which leads to where soldiers accused of sexually assaulting a Palestinian from Gaza are being held.
The Hebrew newspaper Haaretz reported that "about 200 right-wing activists stormed the military court headquarters inside the Beit Lid base, where the nine reserve soldiers who were detained today (Monday) for questioning on suspicion of seriously mistreating a Palestinian detainee in the Sde Teiman detention center (in the Negev) were transferred there."
She continued: "Dozens of them stormed the base and entered the military court building inside. The soldiers (from the base guards) are trying to stop them."
The newspaper explained that "among the demonstrators were masked and armed soldiers, some of whom bore the logo of Force 100 on their military uniforms, which is the unit responsible for guarding detainees in the Sde Teiman camp."
She pointed out that a number of Knesset members, including Tali Gottlieb (Likud) and Yitzhak Kroizer (Otzma Yehudit), threatened the Military Advocate General (Major General Yifat Tomer-Yershalmi) with his words.
The Israeli Broadcasting Authority revealed that 10 soldiers severely beat a prisoner from Gaza, whose name was not mentioned, and he was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, even to his anus, which required the military police to open an investigation.
In recent months, there have been many reports denouncing the attacks on Palestinian prisoners from the Gaza Strip in Sde Teiman prison, and the Israeli authorities usually claim to be investigating the matter without tangible results.
The Israeli Supreme Court is considering a petition submitted by Israeli human rights organizations to close the notorious Sde Teiman prison, where Palestinian detainees from Gaza are subjected to systematic torture, sexual assault and medical neglect, and Israel prevents any human rights delegations from visiting to assess their conditions.
