Gideon Levy: Spreading Israel's dirty laundry abroad is our greatest hope
Israeli writer Gideon Levy said that his initiative to spread dirty internal laundry abroad is due to two reasons, the first of which is that there is an interest in listening to what is said, and the second is that the outside world is the one who will largely determine the future of Israel, and therefore it should not be left to the right.
Levy explained, in his column in Haaretz newspaper, that the public debate in which he participated last week in Toronto, Canada, dealt with the issue of whether anti-Zionism means anti-Semitism, and all tickets for his attendance were sold out early, which would not have happened if the hall had been in the Tel Aviv.
The writer pointed out that no one complains when right-wing advocates tamper with things in the world through the Zionist establishment, professionals, Jewish organizations, and Israeli embassies, which is a large lobby that has huge amounts of money and spreads panic with false claims that any criticism of Israel, the occupation, or Israeli apartheid is anti-Semitism. Thus they silence half the world for fear of suspected anti-Semitism.
Against Israel
This manipulation leads to results in the short term - as the writer sees - but in the long term it will turn against Israel and the Jews because of whom freedom of expression has been suppressed, as everything is permissible for the settlement right and for the Zionist and Jewish establishment, as if hearing a different voice from Israel is a betrayal.
Levy explained that the most serious damage to Israel’s standing was due to its policies, as the damage caused to Israel by the images of atrocities in Gaza was not caused by any interview or speech given by an Israel hater. He continued that the sight of a child convulsing and dying on a blood-stained floor in a hospital. Like the Rantissi Hospital, it is more devastating than a thousand editorials.
The writer referred to an investigative report by The Guardian newspaper that revealed the methods used by Israel to deal with what is happening in the United States and at universities there, stressing that government propaganda efforts, or the “concert” as it is called, cannot eliminate the justified hatred raised by Israel’s behavior in the Gaza Strip. Gaza and the West Bank.
Real damage
No article has done as much damage as the image of a wounded Palestinian tied to the hot hood of an Israeli army vehicle in Jenin, Levy says, so even those who care about Israel's image abroad rather than its moral core must want a change in policy. .
Regardless of the benefit or harm to Israel, all individuals have the right to express their opinions everywhere and at all times, according to the writer.
Levy pointed out that what was done by Israeli public figures demanding that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not be invited to Congress was not only their right, but rather it was their duty, and the duty of everyone who believes, like them, that Netanyahu is irreversibly harming the state.
Levy stressed that Haaretz newspaper, which is read abroad in its English edition, is not only a source of information, but also a source of hope that all of Israel will not be reduced to settlers or a National Security Minister like Itamar Ben Gvir, or Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich or Netanyahu.
