Haaretz: The United States must recognize Palestine

The Israeli newspaper "Haaretz" said that the United States' imposition of sanctions on the far-right Benzi Gopstein, the Lehava organization, and the violent settlers, in addition to the Netzah Yehuda Brigade, are considered important measures that reflect change in the United States.

The newspaper explained in its editorial that these measures are important to show the path that Israel must take if it wants to continue to enjoy international legitimacy and the special protection it receives from the United States, its best friend in the world.

Demarcating the borders of Israel's movement

Haaretz considered this American move to be the way to demarcate the borders of the Israeli movement in the literal and figurative sense of the word, calling for a democracy that respects international law and human rights within its sovereign territory, and denouncing the settlement project, plunder and apartheid outside the Green Line.

These moves are also consistent - according to the newspaper - with America's supposed insistence on the necessity of Israel agreeing to hold serious discussions regarding the "next day" in Gaza and a return to negotiations towards a two-state solution.

The newspaper saw that there is a lack of clarity in Washington’s use of its veto power against accepting the State of Palestine as a full member of the United Nations, especially since Robert Wood, the Deputy US Ambassador, said that it “does not reflect opposition to the establishment of a Palestinian state, but rather an acknowledgment that this will only come through negotiations.” Direct communication between the two parties.

A problematic American interpretation

Haaretz believes that this problematic interpretation fuels Israel's rejection of any unilateral recognition of the Palestinian state, and is closely linked to its rejection of the two-state solution and its desire to annex all the occupied territories without granting citizenship to the Palestinians who live in them.

It cautioned that there is no contradiction between the peace negotiations and the Palestinians’ request for membership in the United Nations.

It said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu refrained from conducting negotiations with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas for 15 years.

The newspaper concluded that there is no reason for the United States not to recognize a Palestinian state alongside Israel, while working to conduct negotiations aimed at achieving a two-state solution.
