78 Palestinian female detainees face death every day in Israeli prisons

The Prisoners and Ex-Detainees Affairs Authority said that 78 female detainees face death every day in “Damoun” prison.

The Commission explained, in a statement issued today, Tuesday, on the occasion of Palestinian Prisoner’s Day, which falls on April 17 of each year, that among the detainees are 60 from the West Bank, 3 from Jerusalem, 9 from within the 1948 territories, and 6 from the Gaza Strip. Of them, 50 were detained, 21 were sentenced to administrative prison, and 7 were sentenced to varying periods of sentences.

Based on the Commission’s lawyer’s visit to Damoun Prison, she indicated that the two detainees, Aman Nafi’ (60 years old), from the town of Kober, northwest of Ramallah, who is the wife of Nael Al-Barghouti, the oldest Palestinian prisoner, and Asmaa Shatat from Deir Al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip, were subjected to abuse during their arrest.

She explained that the detainee Nafi was sentenced to administrative imprisonment for a period of 3 months, which is supposed to end on 06/04/2024.

Regarding the detainee Shatat, she was brought to “Damoun” 15 days ago, after she was arrested with her husband Arafat from their home, and he was shot in the foot, leaving behind 3 children, the eldest of whom is 13 years old, and the youngest of whom is 3 years old.

She explained that Shatat was subjected to harsh interrogation and severe beating more than once, the effects of which are still evident on her face to this day. She also suffered a nervous breakdown when her husband was brought as a tool to pressure her, as he was handcuffed and his legs were covered with a cloth, and he showed signs of fatigue and torture.
