The head of Libyan Government Al-Dabaiba suspends Al-Manqoush for meeting with Cohen

The head of the Libyan National Unity Government, Abd al-Hamid al-Dabaiba, suspended his foreign minister, Najla al-Mangoush from work, after the announcement on Sunday of a meeting between her and her Israeli counterpart in Rome last week .

Dabaiba's government said in a statement, on Sunday evening, that it had decided to suspend Mangoush from "working as a precautionary measure" provided that she will be "referred to investigation" before a committee headed by the Minister of Justice.

The Libyan Foreign Ministry described what happened in Rome as an "accidental meeting", but the news of the meeting led to popular protests in several Libyan cities. The political dispute erupted on Sunday, after the announcement of the Israeli Foreign Ministry in a statement, that the foreign ministers of Israel and Libya met last week in the first diplomatic initiative of its kind between the two countries.

The statement pointed that Foreign Minister Eli Cohen and his Libyan counterpart in the Tripoli-based government, Najla al-Mangoush, spoke during a meeting in Rome hosted by Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Taiani.

However, the Libyan Foreign Ministry confirmed on Sunday that Al-Mangoush refused to hold any meetings with any party representing the Israeli entity, and said that what happened in Rome was "an unofficial and unprepared casual meeting during a meeting with the Italian Foreign Minister, and it did not include any discussions, agreements or consultations." And it added that the foreign minister affirmed "Libya's constants towards the Palestinian cause in a clear and unambiguous manner."

The Libyan Foreign Ministry accused Israel of giving what happened the nature of the meeting or talks.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry statement quoted Cohen as saying that the two sides discussed "the importance of preserving the heritage of Libyan Jews, including the restoration of synagogues and Jewish cemeteries in the country." There was no immediate confirmation from Rome of the meeting.

News of the meeting sparked protests in some Libyan cities and also prompted the issuance of a letter from the country's Presidential Council asking for clarification and called on the unity government to clarify the truth about Mangoush's meeting with the foreign minister of the "Israeli entity," according to a correspondence confirmed by a spokeswoman for the Presidential Council. The letter said that this development "does not reflect the foreign policy of the Libyan state and does not represent the Libyan national constants, and is considered a violation of Libyan laws that criminalize normalization with the Zionist entity." And it demanded that the government, in the event that the meeting was proven, "take the most severe penalties in accordance with the laws and procedures in force in Libya."

Protests erupted in the streets of Tripoli and its suburbs on Sunday evening, rejecting normalization with Israel. The protests spread to other cities, where young men blocked roads and burned tires, waving the Palestinian flag.

Like a number of other North African countries, Libya has a rich Jewish heritage. But during the decades of rule of the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, who was a staunch supporter of the Palestinian cause, thousands of Jews were expelled from Libya and many synagogues were destroyed.

Libya has been witnessing chaos since the fall of the Muammar Gaddafi regime in 2011. The country is currently ruled by two competing governments, one in the west headed by al-Dabaiba and the other in the east headed by Osama Hammad, commissioned by parliament and supported by Khalifa Haftar.

Three American representatives visit an opposition-held area in northern Syria

Three members of the US House of Representatives made a rare visit Sunday to an area in northern Syria controlled by Turkish-backed opposition factions, according to a team from Agence France-Presse at the scene.

Joe Wilson, Victoria Spartz and Dean Phillips visited a hospital in the city of Azaz (Aleppo Governorate) coming from Turkey via the Bab al-Salama border crossing, where they were greeted with a banner reading "Welcome to Free Syria", surrounded by the flags of the Syrian revolution.

"The aim of the visit is to see the reality in the liberated areas," said Yasser al-Hajji, a public relations official in the Turkish-backed interim government.

The deputies met orphans due to the war that has killed more than half a million people since 2011, before the visit was shortened for security reasons, according to what one of their escorts told AFP.

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham controls about half of the area of the province of Idlib (northwest) and adjacent areas in the provinces of Aleppo, Latakia and Hama.

There are also other less influential opposition factions, supported by Türkiye to varying degrees.

The director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdel Rahman, indicated that "to avoid causing controversy in the United States, they did not go to Jendires, in the areas controlled by Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham."

Despite declaring its affiliation with al-Qaeda, Washington still classifies the organization as a "terrorist" organization.

Abdul Rahman added, "Members of Congress wanted to evaluate the work of the interim government, in order to study the possibility of sending humanitarian aid through Bab al-Salamah instead of Bab al-Hawa," which is controlled by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham.

Representative Joe Wilson said Friday on the X platform (formerly Twitter) that "those who seek normalization and strike deals with (Syrian President) Bashar al-Assad are dealing with death itself."

He had also expressed support for the anti-government protests in southern Syria.

He pointed out via X that the protests "inspire the world and show that there is no future or stability for Syria under the Assad regime."

On Sunday, the American representatives met with the director of the "White Helmets" organization, the civil defense in the areas controlled by the opposition and jihadist factions in and around Idlib, Raed al-Saleh.

"The meeting touched on the importance of continuing cross-border aid in light of the growing humanitarian needs after the catastrophic devastating earthquake," which struck Turkey and Syria in February, killing tens of thousands, said a statement by the White Helmets on platform X.

The organization also indicated that the two sides discussed "the popular movement taking place in the Syrian regions, the importance of confronting attempts to float the Assad regime and impunity for the atrocities it committed, and the need to strengthen accountability and hold perpetrators accountable."

Under the United Nations mechanism established in 2014, Bab al-Hawa is the only gateway for aid to enter northwestern Syria from Turkey, without the permission of the Syrian government.

On July 11, this mechanism, which Damascus denounced as a violation of its sovereignty, was not extended before the United Nations announced in early August an agreement with the Syrian regime that would allow the delivery of aid for a period of six months through the Bab al-Hawa crossing.

Israel reveals thwarting the smuggling of weapons attempt

It was revealed, on Sunday evening, that the thwarting of the arms smuggling operation from the Jordanian border at the end of last July, which was described at the time as unusual, contained Iranian-made explosive devices.

According to the Hebrew channel Reshet Kan, these devices were apparently on their way to armed cells in the West Bank, or they were on their way to other cells inside Israel that were apparently recruited to carry out attacks.

The channel indicated that the Shin Bet is still investigating the smuggling attempt.

These developments come in light of the continuous Israeli accusations, at the political and security level, of Iran trying to ignite the situation in the West Bank and financing armed cells there to carry out attacks.

The Kingdom is working to reach the list of the top 10 countries in the world in the logistics performance index by 2030.

Among the logistics projects, what the Kingdom announced last March to establish a new global center for procurement and logistics services in Saudi Arabia by 2025, which is a partnership project between Saudi Aramco and the global logistics company DHL.

The national campaign to recover the bodies of the martyrs detained by the Israeli occupation, the institutions of prisoners and the various activities of the Nablus governorate, and the families of dozens of martyrs, called on international bodies and human rights organizations to put pressure on the occupation government to close this file and release the bodies of the martyrs.

This came during a national event organized by the campaign, along with the rest of the institutions, in Martyrs' Square in the center of Nablus, today, Sunday, to commemorate the National Day for the Repatriation of the Martyrs' Bodies, which falls on August 27 of each year.

Each coffin was wrapped in the Palestinian flag and the name of a martyr from the Nablus governorate was written on each coffin, whose bodies are still being held by the occupation, and their number is (75 male and female martyrs).

The participants in the event raised banners affirming that the detention of the bodies of the martyrs in the morgues and numbers graves is an international, human and moral crime committed against their families and a clear violation of the provisions of the Fourth Geneva Convention.

The head of the Commission for Detainees and Ex-Prisoners' Affairs, Qaddoura Musa, said in his speech during the event that "the criminal occupation state is a coalition of a group of racist gangs, and it is shameful for a country recognized by the United Nations to continue to detain the bodies of Palestinian martyrs."

In his speech on behalf of the national campaign, the director of the Jerusalem Center for Legal Aid, Issam Al-Arouri, affirmed the determination of our people to continue the struggle for the liberation of the bodies of our highest possessions (the martyrs).

He added: "The occupation has closed the door to negotiation regarding the bodies of the martyrs and turned this file, in a compound crime, into a material for bargaining and trading," stressing that there is no law in the world that allows trading in the issue of the bodies of the martyrs except in the occupying country.

For his part, Muzaffar Thouqan said in a speech on behalf of the National Committee for Supporting Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners in Nablus, "The right to retrieve the bodies of the martyrs is a legitimate right of our Palestinian people," stressing the importance of struggle by all means to recover their bodies.

He added, "This file is a national struggle issue that must remain alive in the conscience of our people."

In turn, the mother of the martyr, Saed Al-Koni, told Al-Quds.com that her son was martyred on 9/25/2023, when the occupation forces shot him while he was riding a motorcycle in Jabal Al-Tur (the southern mountain in the city of Nablus).

She added: "The body of her son was burnt by the bombs that the occupation fired at him, and that they found his amputated hand at the place of his martyrdom, and that the family buried the hand in one of the city's cemeteries, while the rest of the body is still with the occupation and they do not know anything about it."

And called on President Mahmoud Abbas and human rights organizations to transfer the file of the martyrs whose bodies are withheld by the occupation to the International Criminal Court.

Maha Rawajbeh, the sister of the martyr Bilal Rawajbeh, who was martyred about 3 years ago at the Hawara military checkpoint, said, "The occupation claimed that Bilal was martyred, but we are not sure of that because we have not seen his body or received it yet."

Deportation of Palestinian students from Al-Quds University in Abu Dis

The Jerusalem Governorate warned of a new policy adopted by the Israeli occupation authorities against Palestinian students, by preventing them from reaching their universities.

And the Jerusalem Governorate stated, in a press statement today, Sunday, that the occupation authorities removed the two students, Baraa Hatem Fiqha from Tulkarm Governorate, and Batoul Iyad Dar Asi from the city of Ramallah, from Al-Quds University in Abu Dis, east of occupied Jerusalem, under the pretext of practicing union work inside the university, which means depriving them from continuing their university education, in a systematic racist policy against education and its institutions in Jerusalem.

It added that this racist decision comes at a time as education in Jerusalem is fought against, and millions of dollars are allocated for the sake of Israelization  and Judaization it, as the Minister of Finance in the extremist occupation government, Bezalel Smotrich, announced several days ago during his disclosure of the five-year plan to Judaize Jerusalem and education there, while The occupation authorities provide facilities to attract Palestinian students, especially Jerusalemites, to study in its affiliated schools and Hebrew universities.

He called on international human rights and human rights institutions in the world, especially UNESCO, to denounce and reject this decision, and to put pressure on Israel, the occupying power, to retract it, and all decisions related to the Judaization of education in Jerusalem, especially since international conventions, especially the Fourth Geneva Convention, that stipulates the freedom of peoples under occupation to choose their curricula and teachers, in line with their customs, traditions and religions, without interference by the occupying power.

op-ed: What practical actions in dealing with Israeli Racism?

Al Quds op-ed

Al Quds op-ed

Opinion Writer

The statements of the extremist and racist Israeli Minister of National Security, in which he said that his right and the right of his wife and children to move in the West Bank, which he claims is Jewish, is more important than the right of Arabs to move, and that his right to life comes before any right of the Palestinians, indicating that this is the existing reality, were met with wide criticizing reactions, whether by the United States or the European Union.  As statements that reflect hateful racism and are tantamount to a call to continue committing crimes against our people, whether by the occupation forces or herds of settlers supported by these forces and by the Israeli government led by Netanyahu, which is one of the the most hateful government against all Palestinians.

These reactions are positive and confirm the nature of the Israeli entity, which is based on committing massacres and atrocities against our people, their land, property and sanctities within the framework of its attempts to force our people to leave, either voluntarily or through ethnic cleansing that it has carried out and is still carrying out, and which it is preparing to expand by seizing any opportunity. To achieve this goal, especially since the leaders of the occupation have declared more than once and on every occasion that Jordan is the state of the Palestinians, that their place is in Gaza or Jordan, and that they have no right to the West Bank, even though the entire world, including USA, the main supporter of the occupation, considers it an occupied territory.

However, what is more important than the condemning and critical reactions is taking practical steps against the racist occupation, especially since the prime minister of the occupation tried to justify and defend the statements of the extremist and racist security minister, which requires taking practical steps to curb this unbridled Israeli racism.

America and the European Union know and witness the extent of this racism and the crimes committed against our people, and this is what prompts us to say that only American and European criticism of these statements is not enough, and more work is required because they are the ones who established the occupying state and continue to support it at the expense of our people.

And if America and Europe are serious about their criticism of racism, then they must do more than that, because it has become only a dust in the eyes, while their support is continuous and at all levels, militarily, economically and diplomatically, and they prevent Israel from being brought to the International Criminal Court to be tried for the crimes against our people of murder, oppression and terrorism. Settlement expansion to increase the number of settlers, etc. are crimes and violations that humanity condemn.

The time has come for the unity of the national ranks to confront this abhorrent racism, which will lead to an increase in hostility between the Palestinians and the Israelis and will explode the region sooner or later, and everyone must shoulder their responsibilities before it is too late.

op-ed: Normalization... Saudi Arabia is the strongest link

 Dr.. Dalal Saeb Erekat

Dr.. Dalal Saeb Erekat

Opinion Writer

There is much talk about an upcoming deal between Saudi Arabia and Israel, with American mediation. Before starting, we must admit that Saudi Arabia's position differs from the rest of the countries that have moved towards normalization, and that the road to the White House starts from Jerusalem! Saudi Arabia's position on the Palestinian issue is clear and unambiguous, and Saudi Arabia has made its position clear on many occasions, despite the noise of the American and Western media to the contrary, based on the language of interests and the language of weapons in a pragmatic neoliberal world! Saudi Arabia rejects normalization before implementing the Arab Peace Initiative launched by King Abdullah for peace in the Middle East. It was announced at the Arab summit in Beirut in 2002. Its aim is recognition and normalization of relations between Arab countries and Israel in exchange for the establishment of an internationally recognized Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital and the return of refugees according to the Resolution 194 and Israel's withdrawal from the occupied Golan Heights. This initiative won the support of all Arab and Islamic countries, while the occupying power neglected it by not responding.

Netanyahu is trying hard to promote a close normalization agreement with Saudi Arabia, as this is his survival strategy! Recently, Saudi Arabia took the decision to appoint a “non-resident” ambassador to the Palestinian Authority. Saudi Arabia’s appointment of Ambassador “Nayef Al-Sudairi” to the State of Palestine, and Consul General of the Kingdom in Jerusalem, comes as a message to Israel that is in the interest of the Palestinians. The Israeli Foreign Minister, Eli Cohen, replied: “They did not coordinate with us. We will not allow the opening of any diplomatic mission. They did not coordinate with us. We will not allow the opening of any diplomatic mission. What lies behind the progress of the talks between Saudi Arabia and the American administration is that the Saudis want to deliver a message to the Palestinians that they have not forgotten them. We do not allow countries to open consulates.” ».

Historically, there was a Saudi representation residing in Jerusalem in 1947 under the direction of King Abdulaziz Al Saud, the Saudi Consulate General was opened in Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood. The appointment of an extraordinary ambassador today does not mean to raise the level of relations, but rather to not have his actual residence, which is a normal and natural expression according to the Vienna Conventions on Diplomatic Relations 1961 and 1963. In the text of the appointment, Saudi Arabia used the expression “the city of Jerusalem” and not “East Jerusalem.” This is an explicit response to the United States considering the “city of Jerusalem” and not “West Jerusalem” as the capital of Israel.. With this step, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia confirms that the “city of Jerusalem” is a land for the State of Palestine that has “the right of sovereignty” over it, and thus it has the right to accredit ambassadors and consuls there.

Netanyahu is in dire need of this agreement, but the world must realize that Netanyahu has not presented or proven since the signing of the "Abraham Accords" anything attractive to Saudi Arabia, on the contrary; It embarrassed the countries that normalized, and the agreement to form the coalition that took place on December 28, 2022 refers to the Land of Israel, where the rights are exclusive to the Jews! "The Jewish people have an exclusive and inalienable right throughout the Land of Israel." If the constitution of this government is based on the Judaization of the Noble Sanctuary, securing the police grip on it, and the escalation of violence against the Palestinians by enabling the terror of settlers, the confiscation of lands, and the allocation of millions for settlement and annexation in the occupied territories! What does the Netanyahu government offer to tempt Saudi Arabia to ride the wave of normalization? On the contrary, it is not in the kingdom's interest to abandon its peace initiative that contains clear criteria.

The Saudis are well aware that the Israelis do not think of real peace, otherwise the peace initiative has been ready for 20 years. Saudi Arabia wants stability, development, peace and supremacy in the region, and this will only be achieved by resolving the Palestinian issue in a just solution and by establishing a Palestinian state according to the Saudi Arab initiative and with “East Jerusalem” as its capital. What hinders this is the Israeli refusal and the adoption of economic deals in exchange for peace. This will not come up with a political solution.

Under the reign of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi Arabia is presenting itself as a progressive regional and global power. The Saudi position today is very strong, taking into account the détente with Iran and Syria in the region, and on the other hand the development in Chinese-Saudi relations and finally the BRICS alliance, where Saudi Arabia joins a group of countries (China, Russia, South Africa, Brazil, India) in addition to the accession of the UAE And Egypt, Ethiopia, Argentina and Iran at the beginning of 2024, and this is considered a very important development in the international balance of power after decades of a unipolar system.

Analyzes indicate that there is progress in the negotiations, but the Saudi demands related to the nuclear reactor, uranium enrichment, and the defense agreement with the United States, and this requires the approval of Congress, and these are the conditions that impede the agreement, and not the Palestinian file, as some believe. The Saudi position is clear and strong, and Saudi Arabia adopts a pragmatic and progressive approach in its negotiations, so as to ensure its security and supremacy in the region through this agreement, which may save Netanyahu and Biden, if it is concluded

op-ed: Mr. President.. elections are people's widespread demand

Ibrahim Daibes

I think we are living through a political phase that is one of the worst that our people have experienced over decades. Until we reached the painful conditions we are in and a dark future.. I feel, and I may be wrong, that the people live in one valley and the leaders in another, and that the people seem unable to change these conditions and that the leaders, as is clear and well-known, seem not interested in changing this reality, that serves their own factional interests.

The occupation devours what it can of the land, establishes settlements, plans for the next decades, and begins implementation immediately. Our leaders continue to issue statements of condemnation and absolute verbal rejection of these occupation practices. Then each commander goes to his base and home and prepares for the upcoming personal plans and writes the necessary speeches and statements on the public level, that no one in this country listens to or cares about anymore.

The only steadfast and strong glimmer of hope remains in our demographic presence on this land, while clinging to it and being careful as much as possible to work to protect it and prevent the occupation from stealing it. There are many cases where citizens succeeded in defending and protecting their lands from the oppression of the occupation, and we have strong evidence of this, which is the increasing Palestinian presence within the borders of what we call the Arabs of the interior, whose presence is considered a thorn in the side of the occupation despite all the difficulties and obstacles they face.

The big question facing us is what to do and how can we get out of this vicious circle? And I believe that the simple and easy answer is to hold presidential, municipal and rural elections so that the people can say their word and choose who represents them, and that these elections, if they happen, are not for one-time, but are repeated every four years, for example, or specify a time period for holding them and commit to that.

At the forefront of such elections are the real presidential elections, every four years, unlike what is happening with us in the current circumstances.

op-ed: Despicable and dreamy alternatives to the death of the two-state solution

Nihad Abu Ghosh

Nihad Abu Ghosh

Opinion Writer

There is much talk in the Palestinian and regional literature about Israel's destruction of the two-state solution, as a result of the policies and practices of the occupying power on the ground, especially the flooding of the occupied West Bank with settlements and settlers. What is meant by the two-state solution, before falling into any ambiguity, is the choice of the Palestinian state as an embodiment of the Palestinian national program, which is confirmed by international legitimacy resolutions, Palestinian representative institutions, and Arab summits, with the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital on the territories occupied in 1967. This must be clarified because there are those who claim that the two-state solution can be embodied by a state in the Gaza Strip alongside Israel after its annexation of most of the West Bank. Even Netanyahu said sarcastically about the dismembered lands left to the Palestinians according to the deal of the century, "If they want to call it a state, let them call it that." There are ministers in the Israeli government who claim that there are two states for the Palestinians, Jordan and Gaza.

The decline in the chances of a two-state solution is also linked to Israel's tightening of the occupied Palestinian territories and their populations to the wheel of the Israeli economy by destroying the foundations of the Palestinian economy and taking full control of the crossings, resources and airspace. This control now includes all aspects of Palestinian life, including electricity, water, communications, transportation, population and land records, the use of the Israeli currency, and the dependence of the Palestinian Authority budget on the Israeli decision to transfer clearance funds (it is noteworthy that the Oslo Agreement and the Paris Protocol did not guarantee any international mechanism to compel Israel to transfer these funds, and they remained subject to the Israeli decision and its arbitrary deductions) and even individual and personal freedoms such as the right to travel, change the place of residence, civil status transactions and the issuance of documents remained subject to the approval of the Israeli occupation.

This trend of the domination of the occupation and the subordination of the Palestinians to its authorities began to strengthen instead of diminishing after the Oslo Accords, specifically in the last two decades, despite the appearances and ceremonies enjoyed by the Palestinians, including authority, security agencies, ministries, agencies, passports, foreign diplomatic representation, and the presence of foreign representations. This annexation and its repercussions are not limited to the diaries of our lives and the Israeli harassment and violations that do not stop. Rather, the most dangerous thing is that it has moved to political approaches to the settlement, such as the realistic dealing with the Palestinian issue as if it is an internal Israeli affair, and the American and most European dealings with the Palestinians as part of their relations with Israel. Even the foreign representations in Palestine, most of them follow the embassies of their countries in Tel Aviv, to accept the Israeli exclusivity of the Palestinians under the pretext that any problem must be resolved through negotiations, leading to international and regional shaking hands from the two-state solution as if it has become impossible.

Linked to this fallacy of the practical retreat from the option of the two-state solution, and to keep it in theory, is the call on the Palestinians to accept what is available and possible, as if the two-state solution has become outside the realm of possibility. This option is being covered up with floating talk about "adhering to the two-state solution" or preserving this solution, and as a result, economic temptations are being hinted at, and Israel is being asked to provide serious facilities. Even this last offer was mentioned in leaks of American offers to Saudi Arabia in exchange for normalization with Israel. . Unfortunately, it is possible to find in some Palestinian discourse such ambiguous positions, which express their willingness to deal with these concessions.

In the vicinity of this bazaar, there are many voices promoting the death of the two-state solution, some of which stem from a Palestinian national ground, or at least from a position of sympathy with the people for the Palestinians and their just cause. Indeed, a political movement was formed for this purpose and its alternative proposition is based on the call for "one state with equal rights." This movement includes Palestinian and Israeli anti-occupation activists, and has some support in local and international academic circles.

And with the necessity of distinguishing between the liquidation approach carried by the Israeli projects, with which the Western circles, especially the American administration, are colluding, and between the Palestinian jurisprudences that bear more than one face, some of which tend to compromise and accept what is offered to it, and others of a diligent nature that sees the depth of the impasse in which our case was stuck after Oslo agreement.

No one has the right to prohibit jurisprudence and thinking on others, if the matter is related to political and intellectual jurisprudence that presents militant alternatives to the program of the independent state, but the adoption of an alternative national program for the Palestinian people should come from its inclusive legitimate institutions, and not from the jurisprudence of this leader or thinker or that. And before that, the legitimacy of these legitimate and representative institutions should be renewed through comprehensive elections in which all the Palestinian people's gatherings participate.

These propositions impose more questions than the answers presented, and among these questions:

- Do we have to accept that the Israeli measures, including Judaization, annexation, settlement, and the material facts imposed by Israel during the past decades, are final and irreversible, and we only have to accept them?

Is it possible for any political program concerning a people and a liberation movement to suffice with presenting distant goals as utopian and dreamy desires, without detailed programs and plans that explain ways to achieve these goals and the proposed forms of struggle, and how to mobilize the masses of the people and their energies to contribute to this program, as long as the aforementioned goals will not be presented to us on a silver platter?

- What about the position on the continued settlement, do we have to accept it because it will be part of the one-state solution, and what is the fate of the wide international recognition of the Palestinian state?

- Is it wise and realistic to accept defeat before it occurs, or is it more appropriate to review our programs, tools of struggle, conditions of our institutions, and ways of managing national affairs?

Relying on the traditional answers that our children memorize by heart does not help us in addressing these questions and challenges, nor in dealing with transformations and conspiracies aimed at undermining our inalienable and legitimate rights, just as theoretical and academic answers are not sufficient to guide the struggle towards freedom and independence, and what is needed is answers that turn into programs and daily action plans, instead of waiting for what fates will do to us.

op-ed: National resistance, not an external agenda

Ibrahim Abrash

Ibrahim Abrash

Since the remarkable escalation of guerrilla operations in the occupied Palestinian territories with the emergence of the Lions' Den group and the Jenin Brigades almost a year ago, the Israeli political and security leaders, led by Netanyahu, have been accusing Hamas and Islamic Jihad of being behind these operations with support and incitement from Iran and Hezbollah. Netanyahu reiterated these allegations in a meeting (To the Cabinet), which met hastily in response to the Hebron operation on the 21st of this month, threatening that it would respond forcefully to the parties that support and finance those who carry out the operations. He mentioned Iran, Hezbollah, and even Hamas and Islamic Jihad, vowing to return to the policy of assassinations.

These Israeli allegations aim to achieve several goals, including:

1- Covering up the reality of the occupation and its terrorist acts, and on the fact that the resistance is a natural reaction to the occupation that gains its legitimacy from all religious and positivist charters and laws.

2- Strengthening his propaganda system directed against Iran as being behind the instability in the region and thus justifying his terrorist acts against the resistance fighters and their families by claiming to prevent Iran from expanding in the region.

3- Distorting the image of the national resistance and showing that the Palestinian people in the West Bank have surrendered to the fait accompli and are willing to live under the yoke of the apartheid occupation state, and that the commando operations are directed from abroad and not with national motives.

4- Stirring up strife by claiming that the aim of these operations is to overthrow the Palestinian Authority and for Hamas to take control of the West Bank, just as it took control of the Gaza Strip.

5- Misleading Israeli public opinion and attempting to silence the escalating opposition against it by claiming that Israel is exposed to an existential threat that surrounds it from every side.

6- Misleading international public opinion, which has begun to discover the truth about the Zionist entity and its terrorist and racist practices.

There is no doubt that Iran supports the Hamas and Islamic Jihad movements with money and weapons, just as other countries supported the PLO factions even before the emergence of these two movements, and this is normal for liberation movements around the world, as none of them relied on their own capabilities. All the socialist camp, especially China and the Soviet Union, and the Algerian Liberation Front were supported financially, politically and militarily by many Third World countries in addition to the Soviet Union, Egypt and neighboring countries, and the African National Congress in South Africa in its struggle against the apartheid regime was supported by the majority of the world's countries, even Western and from The United Nations, which issued resolutions boycotting the racist De Klerk regime and imposed sanctions on it, and the Free French forces led by Charles de Gaulle found all support and backing from America and Britain during their fight against German Nazism during World War II, and now Ukraine finds all military, financial and political support from NATO to confront what It considers it a Russian invasion of its lands, and no one accuses Ukraine of terrorism while it bombs Russian cities!!

The problem, then, does not lie in the presence or absence of external support for liberation movements from colonialism, and our subject is the Palestinian people and their fighting movements. independent on his land and the legitimacy of his resistance to the occupation.

How can it be believed that an Iranian foreign agenda stands behind the resistance of the Palestinian people to the occupation while the resistance to the occupation extends over a century, from the Al-Buraq uprising of 1929 to the Izz al-Din al-Qassam revolution of 1935 and the Great Arab Revolt of 1936, then the contemporary Palestinian revolution of 1965 and the two great intifadas, all of which were before they appeared. The Islamic Republic of Iran, Hezbollah, and the axis of resistance!! Israeli leaders and analysts also blamed the escalation of guerrilla operations on the extreme right and its policies, and Netanyahu's submission to Ben Gvir and Smotrich's provocative tendencies of the Palestinian national feeling.

Exaggerating talk about an external agenda is an insult to the national resistance fighters and to the Palestinian people in general, because the resistance to the occupation has never stopped and it continues before and after the emergence of the so-called axis of resistance. Since the beginning of the year, 34 settlers have been killed, and the majority of those who carried out the commando operations are citizens who do not belong to any political faction, and the number of fighters officially affiliated with Fatah and the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades and from the security services may exceed the number of those officially affiliated with Hamas and Islamic Jihad. Even if they belong to these two movements, they are Palestinian movements. The majority of these fedayeen were martyred and buried in the land of Palestine as Palestinians, and they were shrouded with the Palestinian flag, not with the flag of Iran or Hezbollah.

There is no doubt that there is a Palestinian division and regional interventions to strengthen the division and support one party at the expense of the other, and there is no doubt that Iran has its own agenda just as the Muslim Brotherhood has theirs, and we do not deny the role of Hamas in the division and its coup against power and its aspiration to replace the PLO in the leadership of the Palestinian people, and it is also true that if The actions of the resistance were within the framework of a comprehensive national strategy, as agreed upon by all the parties, so the feasibility of the resistance would have been better, and there would have been no all this confusion and suspicion, etc. However, this does not justify distorting the resistance and considering every commando operation as serving an external agenda or aiming to weaken and overthrow the authority in the West Bank, and the Hamas movement will be delusional. If she believed that it would happen in the West Bank as it happened in Gaza and that the occupation would enable it to have power and a state in the West Bank.

If the occupation seeks to destroy or abolish the national functional role of the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank or transform it into an agent or a modernizing village association, which is the authority that was established within the framework of a political settlement project in which the Palestine Liberation Organization recognizes Israel. Hamas, so how will Israel allow Hamas to have power in the West Bank when it says publicly that it does not recognize Israel and the armed resistance to liberate all of Palestine?!

op-ed: No to apartheid technology.. the protests continue..

Dr. Amani Al- Qerm

"No to Apartheid Technology" is the title of a popular campaign by activists and employees of Google and Amazon who advocate for Palestinian human rights against the close technological cooperation between Israel and these two companies to serve and sustain the occupation and the apartheid project, especially against the so-called "Nimbus" project.

And this “Nimbus” is an agreement concluded in May of the year 2021 (during the war on Gaza) between the occupation army and Google and Amazon to implement a project to provide highly complex cloud technology and artificial intelligence to the Israeli entity at a value of one billion and 200 million dollars.

Under which artificial intelligence services are harnessed to enable Israel to increase the suffering of the Palestinians, seize their lands, displace and kill them more effectively and harshly. how ? The project simply consists of two parts: a high-speed data center and cloud technology services in order to facilitate surveillance, illegal data collection, control, facial recognition, and prosecution of Palestinian activists, and to make the Israeli-led apartheid policy against the Palestinians more efficient. This means that Palestine will become a large prison, and the movement of every Palestinian who lives in it will be monitored continuously. Nimbus also provides the Israeli Land Authority, which is directly responsible for settlement and land confiscation, with support services for Palestinian land data to facilitate the process of displacement, land appropriation and settlement construction.

The most dangerous thing is that Israel obtained, according to Nimbus, the right to establish three huge data centers within it that are fully subject to Israeli laws, without any international control over the information from the technological producing companies, and without the possibility of using this data in any international institution that can hold Israel accountable for its crimes.

Protests by activists and institutions advocating for Palestinian rights against the Nimbus project, since the signing of the contract in 2021, escalate every year at every global meeting of Google, Amazon, or even other technology companies. In fact, the heroine of the protests is the Jewish American and former Google employee, Ariel Koren, who exposed the project and behind her hundreds of employees from both companies who opposed this agreement as against human and moral right, and with criminalizing Google and Amazon profits based on war crimes and crimes against humanity and empowering a racist army ( The Israeli army) of technology that helps it to kill.
"Corinne" was fought by Google and had to choose between moving to Brazil or resigning, so she chose the second. She has co-organized the Workers Against Nimbus and No Apartheid Technology campaigns.

The Nimbus project has returned to the fore again this month with the call to protest in front of the Cloud Technology Conference to be held on August 29 in San Francisco, USA.

I call on all activists and youth to join the “No Tech For Apartheid” campaign on its website so that the echo of the protests becomes more influential and more severe on the Israeli entity and on technology companies that feed on Palestinian blood. It is not impossible for Google and Amazon to give up their military project. Google has already abandoned two military projects with China and the US army after huge protests... The important thing is not to neglect the protest policy and underestimate its importance as a method that can make a difference.

op-ed: Normalization from different angles

Dr. Iyad Al-Barghouti

Dr. Iyad Al-Barghouti

Opinion Writer

On the issue of normalization, we are facing a state of "unconsciousness", in which the Arabs seem unaware of its dimensions, dealing with the matter lightly and naively, and at best not with sufficient seriousness.

Normalization, and before it is a position on Israel, is a position on oneself. A position on the nation, on its existence, on its past and present, and most importantly... on its future, and on its "national" security. It's going from dependency to more dependency. Rather, in the end, he joined Israel and its project, which apparently is not understood at all by those who are "concerned."

Normalization is a strategic "projection" of the region. He is the declared and "proud" stand on the side of the enemies. Rather, it is a strange expression of a strange "case" to understand enemies and friends, to which neither the laws of nature nor the laws of logic apply. By normalization, we reconciled Israel and lost our national security... The patient was killed to avoid the disease... The operation succeeded and the patient died, as it is said.

four parties to normalization; America (and the West) and Israel, who prepared the scene, and the Palestinians and the Arabs, who played the "heroic" role in it. Below we will try to shed some light on that.
American normalization
America is almost more keen on normalization than Israel itself, as it is indeed its godfather, with which no one can compete. This is natural, as it employs it strategically in its struggle with China and Russia, and in its battle to preserve its "dominance" over the world. President Biden was clear in this regard when he said that the United States will not leave the region in a vacuum "filled by China and Iran."

The need for America to devote itself to the conflict with China and Russia necessitated the “handing over” of the Middle East, which is an important arena, over which Western control must be maintained because of its strategic location first, and its private gas and oil resources second, to a reliable “agent”, who has no form of responsibility. The reservation, in order to "sponsor" the region and manage it on behalf of the required form, and the best person to play the role of the "exclusive" agent for the West in the region is, undisputedly, Israel.

In order for the process of "handing over" the region to the agent to be successful, a normal relationship must be established between him and its countries. Here, the United States had to use its influence with the regimes of those countries, temptation or pressure, in order to accelerate the process of normalization, and promised the new Sudanese regime to remove it from the list of terrorism and to assist it financially, and pressured in various forms on others, as happened in pressure on some governments to participate in Rabin's funeral was held at the highest levels, as stated by Sheikh Hamad, the Qatari prime minister at the time.

Preparing the region’s arena to accept normalization with Israel, which the United States made as a “yardstick” for the relationship with it, required a lot of American and Israeli effort, represented by working to weaken the countries of the region, especially the powerful ones, whether through the “Arab Spring”, civil wars, or threats Direct Israeli, or through the regime of sanctions and economic pressure imposed by the United States, whether on entities or individuals.

Israeli normalization
Israel seeks complete control over Palestine, and hegemony over the Arab world and the East as a whole. It thus achieves the objectives of its project, which was clearly expressed by Ben-Gurion, when he said that Israel's goal is to achieve Zionism, not peace, and it also fulfills its "duty" as a tool to achieve the goals of the Western imperialist project.

This requires the normalization of its relations with the Arab countries, as it is difficult for it to "work" in light of the boycott of the countries of the region. By normalization, it dismantles its political, economic as well as moral isolation, has a greater margin of movement in all fields, integrates more into global markets, and most of all, in direct line with its role, makes others part of its security system, whereby its primary mission is as a state and as a project.

Israel cannot play its role as an effective agent in the region, without normal relations with its countries and, if possible, with its people. For it, normalization means the Zionization of the region, and the establishment of a Zionist “empire” that is an Arab and Islamic Israeli front, which it leads, and acts as a “rhythm” for it, to carry out its strategic missions, globally against China and Russia, regionally against Iran, and locally against any party that resists. her project.

Israel uses all methods for smooth and lasting normalization, politics, economics, media, psychology and, more recently, religion, which culminated in the Abrahamic peace. It thereby confirms its leadership of the region religiously, and acquires a sanctity through which it aspires to reach out to the peoples whose religion, over a long period of time, constituted perhaps their "strongest" line of defense against colonialism and Zionism.

Once the "principled" approval of normalization by any Arab or Islamic country, Israel takes its "glory" in the game it has mastered, the "mastery" of blackmail and wit, and playing on the various parties in order to achieve the maximum gains from that. For example, Israel's recognition of the Sahara as a Moroccan land  was the "achievement" that Morocco considered the most important in its normalization with it, but Israel procrastinated to the maximum before making that recognition, in order to "force" Morocco to host the "Negev Forum" conference, and in my estimation as well to work on the possibility of "selling" this to Algeria, not to Morocco.

Arab normalization
First of all, it must be acknowledged that the Arab regimes would have preferred that their normalization with Israel remain "secret", except in the case of Sadat, who reached a degree of delusion and illness - if we deal with the matter psychologically - and considered that his "visit" to Jerusalem was in the manner of Omar accepting Islam, a clear conquest, courage and a source of pride. The others - with some exceptions - treated it more or less as a shame.
Although Israel achieves most of its goals from normalization before announcing it, "publicity" and the accompanying ceremonies and rituals remain a basic Israeli demand, as it thus transfers it from the status of the forbidden to the permissible, and Israel, as it is known, "does not enter into the forbidden." Therefore, the normalized parties are brought to the White House, under the auspices of the American President, and the participation of predecessors among the normalized ones and the international media, to announce it.

This scene does not inaugurate a "different" state in Arab-Israeli relations, but rather shows the state of the "nation" for what it is, losing its identity, ignoring its project, a victim of its weakness, and happy with its defeat.

Normalization constitutes a crushing blow to Arab national security, the essence of which is that the only strategic enemy of the nation is Israel. By normalization, the nation places itself on the side of its enemy, and forms with him and under his leadership a front to carry out the American tasks in international conflicts.

Israel achieves what it wants from normalization, while the Arab countries hardly achieve anything, because they do not have any strategy even in the matter of normalization, so their normalization seems random, individual, improvised and "naïve".

No Arab country that has normalized relations with Israel has achieved a goal that can be described as strategic. Rather, it may not have had any such demand; Those countries, for example, did not ask Israel to clarify their borders that should be recognized, so they were recognized within vague borders left to the balance of power and the "Israeli tank" to determine. It did not demand, even just a request, the dismantling of the Israeli nuclear arsenal. Rather, some of them took the initiative to express their desire to possess a nuclear program, which would only be meaningless militarily in light of the abandonment of national security, and economically due to the massive availability of other energy sources.

Israel has rejected the "Arab peace initiative", which represents an Arab offer for normalization, not only because this initiative calls for the establishment of a Palestinian state in exchange for "collective" normalization with it, but also because it does not accept any collective Arab action, even if that is normalization with it. She wants them individually because that matches her strategy of separating them, and being alone is usually more comfortable and more profitable.

Acceptance of "individual" normalization with Israel goes beyond acceptance of it "in principle", to acceptance of it according to the Israeli method, in form and content. It is practically more than normal. It is a political, economic and security alliance that requires the regimes to completely deny the will of their people, clearly comply with the American and Israeli will, deny the Palestinian cause, and engage in the Israeli project to "demonize" the Palestinians as a prelude to finish off their cause.

Palestinian normalization
Palestinian normalization came as a result of full involvement in the illusion, or at least, of the uncalculated bet on the possibility of achieving peace and obtaining a minimum level of Palestinian rights, resulting  with an increased attachment to the Israeli reality, and an increasing involvement with the Western-Zionist project in the region.

The Palestinians bet on influencing Israeli society through normalization. It was a failed bet, as that society accelerated its tendency towards more Zionism and persistence in the occupation, and  continued to "tame" the Palestinians to identify with Israel and its project, and used the Palestinian "dealing" with Israel as a "permission"  to Arab normalization with it, as it withdrew that "moral" deterrent that some Arabs felt the enormity of normalization.

The Israelis used the normalization of the Palestinians with them, and the Oslo Accords in general, as a bridge to reach the Arab countries, where the Palestinians were “comfortable” with this role, which they believed would give them “weight” in a comprehensive peace process in the region, but the Israelis quickly turned around that bridge and built their direct bridges towards the Arabs. And Israel has moved to be the bridge that connects them to some Arabs and to the United States as well.

The Israeli "recognition" of the PLO as the legitimate representative of the Palestinians was the ultimate goal of the Palestinian leadership, and after years of intransigence regarding that, the Israelis realized that they could achieve many of their goals in return for granting the Palestinians that "achievement", after it had been emptied of all its national implications.

Through normalization, the Palestinians tried to prove their serious desire for peace, but in reality, they severed their ties with all the reasons of their strength, and there was nothing left for them but to persevere in pursuing the illusion of Israeli peace.

Normalization, regardless of intentions, appeared as a manifestation of Palestinian weakness, that weakness that the Palestinians must work to change, if they want to return their cause to its natural state, as an axes and a beacon for the forces of liberation in the region and perhaps in the world.

op-ed: Gaza: no economic recovery without security and stability

Mounir al-Ghul

Mounir al-Ghul

Opinion Writer

Security and political stability is one of the most important foundations for economic development. Without security, there is no development, and without development, there is no strong system with sound foundations.

The political stability of any country is considered the fertile ground and the basis for every process of development or progress in all fields, political, economic, social, cultural... and others, in addition to achieving security.

And when we talk about the Gaza Strip, the small coastal enclave on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea, and what it includes of important geographic terrain and the life of about two million Palestinian citizens, most of whom live below the poverty line because of the complex political and security conditions that surround this besieged enclave from all sides, a reading of what the situation was like before 17 years ago and the slight improvement in the situation today in the political and security situation after a series of wars and destruction puts us before a new turning point and a serious question: Does this security and political stability, even if it is temporary, affect economic growth and prosperity in the region?

It is true that stability and calm contribute to improving and raising the pace of work and providing the appropriate atmosphere to achieve progress and growth in all fields, the most important of which is the field of industrial development, because we are talking about a poor geographical area that needs, more than ever before, political and security stability, which will inevitably affect the growth, prosperity and development of the industry. and the economy, to benefit most of the population of the Strip. However, the calm in the Gaza Strip remains temporary, because it is the product of a complex political and security conflict. At any moment, the situation may turn around and the atmosphere of war and attack will prevail, causing the destruction of what is being built during the years of calm. Hence, it can be said clearly that stability on all fronts and areas contributes greatly to citizens welfare and gives them a good time to work and develop and improve the situation of the economy. But this is conditional on permanent stability and continuous calm, and this is what cannot be achieved unless the political equations in the region change, and the Gaza Strip, according to international agreements and UN sponsorship, obtains its independence and complete freedom. At that time, it can be said that the economic recovery will show its features in a large and clear way, given the lack of fear of returning to the square of confrontation and conflict..

Is this possible in the current perspective?

We affirm beyond any doubt that the external and internal developments in the Gaza Strip alike cannot achieve this intention in the short term due to the great complications related to the blockade, Israeli policies, the Palestinian division, the nature of the rule by Hamas and other social obstacles. And therefore, what is the alternative to ensure the continuation of the current temporary stability?

The answer lies in the mentality and awareness of the resistance factions, which in recent months have been adopting a new diplomatic method in which there is a spirit of resistance and pride, but at the same time they think consciously and rationally about the surrounding conditions in the Strip and the possibility of turning them overnight into tragic ones. Hence, this thinking that focuses on the security of citizens, their safety and sparing them the danger and hell of Israeli attacks missed a lot of opportunity for Israel to achieve its goals to impose more anxiety, hunger and calamities in the Strip on the one hand, and contributed on the other hand to bring security and calm, even temporarily, to the citizens of the Strip.

Exploiting this situation and moving away from the language of threats, intimidation and wars at the present time contributes to the creation of a social and economic reality that helps to find a ground upon which to build on to create a productive economic climate that employs financial and human resources, which has a direct economic impact by starting economic growth and employing more people towards a future that fulfills the desires of the present poor generation and protects the interests of future generations.

This ground, which is based on political and security stability, has become a major requirement for the success of the economic development process in the Gaza Strip, as it is considered the mainstay for improving human development indicators through the availability of the possibility of enhancing spending in the fields of education, health, and addressing poverty, and this is linked to development projects offered by donor countries.

When security and safety factors are available, businessmen and project owners are keen to launch their projects and businesses in areas where safety and security conditions are available, in order to ensure their success. Hence, it can be said that development projects in the world of the economy have been presented, until this moment, by businessmen and big companies timidly, for fear of not succeeding, given that the talk here is about medium- and long-term five-year and ten-year projects and plans. Thus, without ensuring the availability of calm, security and safety factors for a long period of time, for fear of new confrontations in the Strip, which greatly limits the chances of building and completing real development projects in the Gaza Strip. Accordingly, the economic situation remains hostage to the political and security conditions in the region. Hence, we say that Gaza needs a long-term truce, through which the international community concerned will ensure the establishment of security and calm in the Strip, and that the calm will continue for as long as possible so that the Strip enjoys an important and decisive factor to move the wheel of the economy....

If security and political stability is considered a necessity of human rights that also prohibits attacks and violations, then here, from our point of view, is a duty placed on the shoulders of the Palestinian factions, in order to restore calm away from division, and a vital demand to lift the unjust Israeli blockade and grant the Gaza Strip its right to practice its calm and stable life in order to succeed in building economic and development projects in all fields .

Most countries of the world possess the elements of development such as natural and human resources, just like the Gaza Strip overlooking the sea, but the loss of political and security stability, the conflict of parties and factions, sometimes disharmony between the government and the citizen, the monopoly of power and governance, the continuation of division, the blockade and other factors prevent the building of a stable entity in the Gaza Strip that is  needed more than ever before. This entity is based on calm, political and security stability, to achieve the recovery it deserves after a long time of siege, wars, destruction and suffering.
