Portuguese Championship: Benfica crowned champion for the first time since 2019
Benfica won the Portuguese Football League title for the first time since 2019, by defeating its guest Santa Clara 3-0 on Saturday in the thirty-fourth and final stage.
Benfica entered the final day as a candidate to clinch the title against the bottom of the standings, thanks to its two-point lead over its direct chaser Porto, the defending champion, who in turn won the same result over Vitoria Guimarães.
German coach Andre Schmidt settled matters early with an early goal by Gonzalo Ramos (7) before Rafa Silva doubled the lead (28), while Spaniard Alejandro Grimaldo added the third goal in the second half from a penalty kick (60).
Benfica ended the season with 87 points and the best offensive balance in the league (82) and the best defense (20), achieving its thirty-eighth title, consolidating its record.
In the other match, Porto won in the first half through Iranian Mehdi Tarmi (8), Ottavio (32) and Brazilian Evanilson (39).
Tarmi won the title of top scorer in the league at the expense of Ramos (22 goals against 19).
The opportunity will be available for Porto to compensate for the disappointment by winning the local cup when it meets Braga in the final next weekend.
