French Championship: Monaco falls to Lyon and loses the chance for third place
Monaco lost any remaining chances of occupying one of the top three places, after falling to Lyon 1-3 in the 36th stage of the French Football League on Friday.
At the “Groupama Stadium”, Lyon achieved a remarkable victory at the expense of the emirate’s team, in the last few meters struggle to determine the final positions for the 2022-23 season, and with it the fate of qualifying for European competitions, especially the Champions League.
By losing it, the fourth Monaco officially lost its chances of advancing to the third place qualifying for the Champions League qualifiers, as it lags behind Marseille by eight points. While Lyon strengthened its position in seventh place with 59 points and maintained a glimmer of hope in the competition to qualify for one of the European competitions.
Monaco is also under intense pressure from Lille V, which is only 5 points behind with three matches remaining.
Lyon's goals were scored by Alexandre Lacazette (38), Maxence Caqueret (57) and Rayan Sharqi (78), while Monaco opened the scoring through Wissam Ben Yedder (2 penalties).
Lacazette raised his tally of goals to 26 this season in the French League.
