UEFA Champions League: Inter renew their victory over Milan and reach the first final since 2010
Italian Inter reached the Champions League final for the first time since 2010, after it renewed its victory over its neighbor and rival Milan 1-0 on Tuesday in the second leg of the semi-finals, after beating it 2-0 in the first leg.
Argentine international striker Lautaro Martinez scored the only goal of the match a quarter of an hour before the end (74), to set Inter a date in the June 10 final in Istanbul with Spanish champions Real Madrid or Manchester City, who meet Wednesday in England (1-1 in the first leg).
This is the sixth final for Inter in the history of its participation in the Champions League and the first in 13 years, specifically since Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho led it to the continental title for the third time in its history at the expense of Bayern Munich in 2010.
"We did a great job in both matches," Martinez said after the match. "What matters is the group. I tested that in the World Cup (with Argentina). If you have a unified group, everyone goes in the same direction, everything is easier."
"We showed that Inter deserve to live these evenings and reach these very important moments for any player. After winning the World Cup and testing the maximum of what a player can achieve, I knew we could reach the final."
Inter prevented its neighbor from reaching the twelfth final in its history and the first since 2007 when it achieved its seventh title at the expense of Liverpool, knowing that it is the second most crowned in the prestigious tournament behind Real Madrid (14).
On the other hand, Inter were crowned three times in 1964, 1965 and 2010 and finished runners-up in 1967 and 1972.
And Inter facilitated his mission back in the match that was considered on the land of Milan (the two teams adopt the same stadium), when he won an early double in the first 11 minutes through Bosnian Edin Dzeko and Armenian Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
Simone Inzaghi became the first Italian coach to lead Inter to the Champions League final since Giovanni Inferenizzi in 1972.
Neratsuri is living a golden period, as it won eight matches in a row in all competitions, and strengthened its chances of returning to the continental competition from the league gate - in the event that it did not achieve the title this season - by occupying third place three stages before the end.
He also reached the final of the Italian Cup at the expense of Juventus, where he meets Fiorentina on the 24th of this month.
Milan coach Stefano Pioli admitted that Inter deserved to qualify. The two matches.
"What were we missing? The first 15 minutes going into the game and not scoring today. We started well, had a good first half with two or three chances, which wouldn't have changed the direction of the game and the enthusiasm of the team. Looking at what we've done in the last three years, it was great to get to The Final. We didn't succeed, it's a big disappointment. It's a tougher season than we expected, but it taught us a lot."
The situation seems unstable for Milan after a humiliating loss against Spezia last weekend in the league, which forced the team and Pioli to enter into a discussion with the fans after the end of the match away from home.
Milan fell to fifth place in the league, four points behind fourth place Lazio, which has the last places to qualify for the Champions League, and is threatened with absence from the supreme competition.
Milan received a dose of hope for the return of its Portuguese star, Rafael Liao, to the starting line-up, after he was the most prominent absentee from the first leg due to a thigh injury, but he missed the services of his Algerian international midfielder Ismail Bennacer, who will be absent for at least six months after undergoing knee surgery after being injured back after. A quarter of an hour has passed.
Liao was one of three changes to the squad for the first leg, as he replaced Belgian Alexis Salmackers on the left corridor, Brazilian Junior Messias instead of Ben Nasser, and German Malik Tiao in the heart of the defense at the expense of Danish Simon Kaer.
On the other hand, Inzaghi did not make any changes to his squad, leaving the Belgian Romelu Lukaku on the bench, despite his recent brilliance.
Milan wasted a real opportunity when Sandro Tonali penetrated into the area on the left side and passed the ball to Spaniard Brahim Dias in the middle of it, who carelessly hit it in the hands of Cameroonian goalkeeper Andre Onana (11).
The following minutes did not witness any chances until Liao penetrated into the area on the left side and hit a creeping ball with his left from a narrow angle that passed next to the left post (38).
And French goalkeeper Mike Mignan kept Milan in the match after he brilliantly and quickly responded to Bosnian Edin Dzeko's header after a free kick by former AC Milan player, Turkish international Hakan Calhanoglu (39).
Mkhitaryan was forced to leave at the end of the first half after suffering an injury in his thigh, and the entry of Croatian Marcio Brozvic (44).
None of the coaches made a change at the break, and the start of the second half came cautiously, without any chances on the two goals.
Pioli was forced to replace my injuries and push the heart of the French defense, Pierre Kalulu, after Tiao was injured (64), while Inzaghi pushed the duo Lukaku and German Robin Gosens instead of Dzeko and Federico Di Marco (66).
Lukaku's impact was immediate, as he exchanged the ball with Lautaro inside the area, so the Argentine broke the offside trap and scored with his left hand in the bottom right corner of the Minyan goal with the first shot on goal in the second half (74).
Milan seemed completely helpless and ended the second half without a single shot on goal and only one in the match.
Lukaku almost scored the second goal with a left-footed shot from inside the area, which was blocked by Minyan (90 + 2).
