Washington is "dodging" about the killing of Abu Aqelah and concealing new results

The US State Department adhered to its declared position on the results of the investigation into the killing of the American-Palestinian journalist Sherine Abu Aqleh, who was assassinated by the Israeli occupation forces in Jenin on May 11, and remained silent about a new report submitted by the US security coordinator, General Michael Finzel in the past few days, about the circumstances. The killing of the Palestinian American journalist.

The Deputy Spokesperson for the US State Department, Vedant Patil, said his daily press conference at the US State Department building on May 3, 2023, which coincided with the Ministry's revival of "World Press Freedom" day, in response to a question by "Al Quds" dot com, regarding the developments of the US position in light of The report of US Gen. Wenzel, the US security coordinator for the Palestinian territories, and whether the department will publish the coordinator's report as requested by US Senator Chris Van Hollan: "Let me say a few things, first you've heard us say this before: We condemn the tragic murder of Sherine Abu Aqelah, and our hearts remain with Her family, as you know Secretary of State (Anthony) Blinken has had the opportunity to speak to her family before and continue to offer them our personal sympathy."

He added, "As you all know, Sherine was not only an American citizen, but also a reporter who commanded the respect of audiences all over the world, including many - almost, I suppose, in this room."

Patel added: "Regarding these reports, I've seen that, I don't have any further assessment to make, I haven't seen that report. My understanding is that the US security coordinator (General Wenzel) hasn't changed the same conclusion that was issued last summer that we issued when we issued a statement. On this matter, which is that IDF gunfire was most likely the cause - inadvertently, but again, I have no further updates or assessments to offer in this report."

When the Al-Quds correspondent followed up on whether the Biden administration would work to see the investigation of accountability for those responsible for her killing and for the serious injury of colleague Ali Al-Samoudi, Patel replied by saying: “As we noted - in our statement last summer (July 4, 2022) the results we reached, Which is consistent with the US Security Coordinator's report, is that this (killing) was unintentional and due to incredibly tragic circumstances, and so what we continue to raise with our Israeli partners and with others around the world is to ensure that we can do, to take the appropriate steps to ensure that When it comes to the rules of engagement, civilians, reporters and members of the media are just trying to do their job, not get hurt."

On the spokesman's emphasis in his response that the administration is focusing its dealings with the Israelis on this matter on "rules of engagement," Patel said, "We've been very clear and consistent on first, the condemnation of the tragic killing of Shireen, but also when the US report was released, and also the summer report In the past, where we have consistently talked about the need and the call for accountability in this case. And we continue to do so. However, as is consistent with the IDF's findings as well as the US Security Coordinator's findings, this (the killing) was not intentional. It was tragic - Because of very tragic circumstances."

Patel added, “One of the ways we are doing, is ensuring that when it comes to the rules of engagement, we work on these issues in coordination and in partnership with Israeli counterparts to ensure that civilians, journalists and media professionals are not harmed. These are all things we have said before consistently, and since the tragic death of Shireen, We have continued to pressure Israel to closely review its policies and practices on rules of engagement and to consider additional steps to mitigate the risk of harm to civilians and protect journalists."

It is noteworthy that the well-known broadcaster, Christian Amanpour, on the American network CNN, interviewed the Arab film director, Sharif Abdel Quddous, which was broadcast on Wednesday, about his documentary film, which will be broadcast the corresponding week, to coincide with the first anniversary of the assassination of Sherine, in which she showed that the killing of the occupation soldier To Sherine Abu Aqleh, the injury of colleague Ali Al-Samoudi was intentional and with the aim of "killing", as it was deliberately directed at the upper part of the body, while there was no shooting from Palestinian fighters, as claimed by the occupation authorities.

And the American Axios website had revealed that the US security coordinator for Israel and the Palestinian Authority recently sent to the US State Department a new report regarding the killing of Palestinian-American journalist Sherine Abu Aqleh, at the hands of the Israeli occupation forces, “according to a senior US official and a letter written by Senator Chris Van Hollen (Democrat from Washington) Maryland) and send it to Secretary of State Blinken."

Senator Van Hollen, in a letter to Blinken, called on the State Department to show lawmakers an unedited copy of the report submitted by Wenzel and his team.

Senator Van Hollen's office said the letter, which was shared with Axios, was sent to Blinken Monday night. In the letter, Van Hollen requested immediate congressional review of the summary report on the death of Shirin Abu Aqleh.
