England Championship: Newcastle are away in third place with a service from Tottenham

Newcastle moved away in third place by defeating Everton 4-1, taking advantage of the service that Tottenham provided him by compensating for his two-goal deficit in front of his guest Manchester United, to a 2-2 draw on Thursday in the thirty-third stage of the English Football League.

At “Goodison Park”, Newcastle, coming from a landslide victory over Tottenham 6-1, achieved its seventh victory in the last eight stages, raising its score to 62 points in third place, two points behind United, who played a match less than coach Eddie Howe’s team.

Newcastle owes the victory, which strengthened his dream of participating in the group stage of the Champions League competition for the first time since the 2002-2003 season, to Callum Wilson, who scored two goals, the first in the 28th minute after the ball fell in front of him following a shot by his Brazilian colleague Joliton, which was blocked by goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, and the second in the 75th minute. With a shot from outside the area (75), raising his personal tally to 13 goals in the league this season.

Joliton scored a header after a pass from Joe Willock (72), and substitute Jacob Murphy after a pass from the other Swedish substitute, Alexander Isaac, after a solo effort (81), the other two goals, while Everton's only goal was through Dwight McNeil from a difficult angle after a corner kick seconds ago. From the fourth goal for the guests (80).

What increases Newcastle's chances of returning to the Champions League is that it is eight points ahead of Tottenham and the brilliant Aston Villa and nine ahead of seventh Liverpool, 5 stages before the end of the season, with two difficult matches remaining for it against leaders Arsenal in the thirty-fifth stage and Chelsea in the closing stage.

In London, with the spirit of qualifying for the cup final, where it will face its arch-rival Manchester City, Manchester United seemed on its way to continue its supremacy over its host Tottenham and achieve its fifth successive victory over it after it advanced 2-0 in the first half, but the latter came back from afar and saved a point.

And by forfeiting its fourth successive victory before facing Aston Villa on Sunday at Old Trafford, United failed to deepen the wounds of Tottenham, who played the match under the leadership of a new temporary coach, his former player Ryan Mason, who took over the task of supervising the team after the humiliating loss to Newcastle United 1-6 Sunday.

The 31-year-old became the third coach of Tottenham this season, after the Italian Antonio Conte, who separated in late March from the London club by mutual agreement, leaving the task of leading the team to his assistant, his compatriot Christian Stellini, until the end of the season.

But the humiliating loss against Newcastle on Sunday, in a meeting during which the London team fell behind 0-5 after only 21 minutes, prompted the club management to abandon the services of Stellini and replace him with Mason, who had previously taken over the job temporarily at the end of the 2020-2021 season after the dismissal of Portuguese Jose Mourinho.

Mason would have wished he had started his new job with an easier task, but by chance he would face United on Thursday and then Liverpool on Sunday in the latter's stronghold.

And returning in this way against United after finishing the first half, trailing 0-2, might give Tottenham the necessary morale boost to try to get the last fourth place to qualify for the Champions League, but the task will not be easy at all.

United struck early through Jadon Sancho, who received the ball from Marcus Rashford on the left side of the penalty area, and hit it with a beautiful arc in the left corner of Fraser Forster's goal (7).

After a series of opportunities for the two sides, United succeeded in strengthening its lead before the end of the first half, following a counterattack launched after a block by Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea, to reach the Portuguese Bruno Fernandes, who played it long and well for Rashford, so he advanced with it and fired it into the net (44), raising his score to 16 goals in the league this season.

Spurs entered strongly into the second half and besieged its guest's goal until he managed to reduce the difference with a wonderful goal by Spaniard Pedro Boro, who reached the ball after the United defense failed to clear it, so he fired it beautiful "on the fly" with his right hand to the left corner of De Gea's goal (56).

Fernandez was very close to returning the difference to two goals, but luck stubbornly stubborn the Portuguese after his shot rebounded after a distinguished effort from the crossbar (57).

Tottenham returned to pressure, but wasted many opportunities, most notably the Korean Heung-min Son (66) and Eric Dier (69), who were in an ideal position to score, before Al-Faraj came through Son after a cross from Harry Kane (79).

Bournemouth deepened the wounds of its last host, Southampton, who appears to be on its way to the second level, “Championship”, by beating it with a single goal scored by Marc Tavernier in the 50th minute before he was injured, raising his team’s balance to 36 points, 7 points from the danger zone.
