Poll: 44% of Democrats consider Israel an "apartheid state"
A poll conducted by the University of Maryland, USA, shows that Democratic voters' support for Israel continues to decline.
And the poll, which included 1203 American voters, showed that 44% of those polled consider Israel an "apartheid state."
The poll revealed the division between the Democratic and Republican parties towards the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. 41% of Republicans said Israel is a "vibrant democracy," while 20% said it was an "apartheid state," while 44% of Democrats considered it an apartheid state, and 34% said it was a flawed democracy.
The researcher at the Brookings Institution, Professor Shibley Telhami, who conducted the survey with his colleague Stella Ross, considered the results remarkable because the use of the term "apartheid" in American discourse is taboo in many circles.
The poll also indicates support from many Democratic voters for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.
And 41% of Democratic Party voters said they support the movement, compared to only 20% who said they oppose it.
These results are consistent with a number of recent opinion polls that show declining support for Israel among Democrats, including the Gallup poll conducted in March 2022, which showed that 49% of the Democrats surveyed sympathized with the Palestinians, compared to 38% who said they sympathized with the Israelis.
The Gallup poll marked a milestone as it was the first time that a majority of Democratic Party voters sympathized with the Palestinian right since Gallup began conducting the annual poll in 2001.
A poll conducted by the Pew Center earlier this month showed that only one in ten Democrats has a positive view of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
