Demonstrations against judicial reform in Israel as Memorial Day celebrations begin
Thousands of Israelis demonstrated on Tuesday evening in Tel Aviv, coinciding with the start of the "celebrations of the 75th anniversary of the founding of Israel" (the Palestinian Nakba).
Israelis have been demonstrating weekly for four months against the judicial reform that Benjamin Netanyahu's government wants to implement, which critics consider anti-democratic.
The protesters raised Israeli flags and chanted the slogan "democracy" before a concert by popular singers, similar to what other cities in the country are witnessing, where platforms and open concerts were held in the streets.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called for unity in a speech broadcast on a giant screen at the start of a ceremony in Jerusalem.
"Only with our unity can we achieve our goals... To be united is to realize that we have one people and one country and we do not have and will not have another land," he said.
The ceremony was held without incident, despite fears it would be disrupted by anti-judicial reform activists.
Meanwhile, supporters of reform plan to gather Thursday evening in front of the Knesset (parliament).
Since the reform project was announced in early January, tens of thousands of Israelis have demonstrated every week to denounce the text and the government that Netanyahu formed in December.
On March 27, the latter announced the “suspension” of the Islah Party to give “an opportunity for dialogue,” after the protests intensified, the start of a general strike, and the emergence of tensions within the ruling coalition.
For the government, the text aims, among other things, to rebalance the powers by strengthening the powers of Parliament at the expense of the Supreme Court, which it considers politicized.
Critics of the reform believe that it threatens to open the way for authoritarian deviations.
