French Championship: Marseille regains second place with a fatal victory over Lyon
Marseille regained second place from Lens by defeating Lyon 2-1 on Sunday, at the end of the thirty-second stage of the French Football Championship .
Marseille was the first to score through its Turkish international striker Dengiz Under in the 44th minute, but veteran captain Alexandre Lacazette equalized for Lyon in the 68th minute, before the southern team snatched the winning goal thanks to friendly fire when Ivory Coast defender Senali Diomandé tried to clear a cross from the front of the goal, and it bounced off. His colleague Malu Gusto hit the net (90 + 2).
Lens temporarily snatched second place on Saturday, beating its guest, Monaco, 3-0.
Marseille raised its score to 67 points, one point ahead of Lens, and eight points behind leaders Paris Saint-Germain, while Lyon suffered its tenth loss this season and its first after three consecutive victories, so its score froze at 50 points in seventh place.
Strasbourg continued its revival by defeating its host Reims 2-0, scored by Senegalese international striker Habib Diallo, who scored both goals in the first and thirty-seventh minutes.
It is the second successive victory for Strasbourg and the seventh this season, raising its tally to 32 points and rising to fifteenth place, on goal difference against Nantes and Brest, who are tied with Troyes 2-2 and Ajaccio 0-0.
Nicolas Baloa (25) and Evan Gessan (90 + 6) scored Nantes' goals, and Guinean Mama Balde (64 from a penalty kick) and Wilson Oduber (90 + 2) scored the goals of Troyes.
Ajaccio completed the match with ten players, after Tunisian striker Yoan Tuzgar was sent off in the 66th minute.
On the other hand, Reims suffered his second loss in a row, and the bleeding of points broke in three matches, during which he scored one point, so his score froze at 47 points in eighth place.
Rennes failed to regain fifth place from Lille, losing to its host Montpellier, with a single goal scored by Englishman Stevie Mavididi in the 84th minute.
Montpellier achieved its victory despite playing with ten players since the 53rd minute, after midfielder Tigi Savanier was sent off.
Montpellier stopped a series of three matches without victory (a draw and two losses), winning its twelfth match this season, consolidating its position in thirteenth place with 41 points.
On the other hand, Rennes failed to take advantage of Lille’s stumbling in front of its host Auxerre 1-1 on Saturday, and it suffered its eleventh loss this season, so its balance froze at 53 points in sixth place, three points behind Lille and by the same difference against Lyon.
Moroccan international striker Zakaria Abu led his team, Toulouse, to restore balance and strengthen its position in the twelfth place, by scoring the winning goal at its host Lorient in the 68th minute, following a pass from Algerian international Fares Chaibi.
Toulouse raised its score to 41 points, compared to 45 for Lorient, which fell to eleventh place after its score was frozen at 45 points, on goal difference behind Nice, which in turn fell to tenth place by losing to its guest Clermont-Ferrand with a goal by Gaetan Laborde (41) compared to two goals for the Austrian Mohamed Cham (37). And the Tunisian Saifuddin Khawi (83).
Clermont-Ferrand rose to ninth place with 46 points.
