European Qualifiers 2024: France sweeps the Netherlands by four, and a strong start for Belgium with Tedesco
The French national team, the runner-up of the 2022 World Cup, started the European Cup 2024 football qualifiers with a landslide victory over its Dutch guest, 4-0, while striker Romelu Lukaku inaugurated the era of German-Italian coach Domenico Tedesco by scoring a hat-trick, winning 3-0 over its Swedish host.
At the Stade de France on the outskirts of Paris, Antoine Griezmann (2), Daewoo Upamecano (8) and Kylian Mbappe (21 and 88) in his first match as captain scored the goals of the French national team, surpassing his 38th goal with the national team, Karim Benzema.
Goalkeeper Mike Mignan, Khalifa retired captain Hugo Lloris, denied the Netherlands an honorary goal when he saved a penalty kick by Memphis Depay in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
The two teams played their first match since the Qatar 2022 World Cup late last year, when France conceded its title by losing on penalties in a crazy final against Argentina (original and extra time 3-3), which eliminated the Netherlands from the quarter-finals with the same weapon.
The French Federation maintained its confidence in coach Didier Deschamps despite the defeat in the final, in which Mbappe scored a hat-trick, after leading him to the 2018 World Cup Russia title, while Ronald Koeman returned to the head of the coaching staff of the Netherlands after the departure of veteran Louis van Gaal after the World Cup.
The "Mills" team suffered a setback on the eve of the match, with five players infected with a viral infection, including Liverpool striker Cody Khakpo, Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt and Newcastle Englishman Sven Putman.
And the "orange" team was previously subjected to a slap at the weekend, with the withdrawal of Barcelona midfielder Frankie de Jong and Ajax striker Stephen Bergeven due to injury.
"We prepared all week with the idea that we couldn't disappoint our fans," Mbappe said after the victory. "It's the first time we're playing here after the World Cup, so we really wanted to repeat with what we did there, except for the World Cup final."
He continued, "Today we succeeded, but it is only the beginning, we must not get high. The hardest part has not been accomplished yet."
The French national team launched a fiery launch and opened the scoring when Griezmann devoured the ball from Kenneth Taylor in the middle of the field, and it reached Colo Moinet, and from him to Mbappe on the left side of the area, he passed it to the middle of it towards Griezmann, who was starting from behind, and he followed it with his left to the right of goalkeeper Jasper Silesen, ending a series of 16 A match without visiting the net with his country, specifically since November 2021.
The owners of the land doubled the lead when Griezmann lifted the ball from a fixed kick from the right side, and the goalkeeper got it in the wrong way, so it hit Obamecano and continued its way into the net (8).
Mbappe, the top scorer in the Qatar World Cup with eight goals, scored the third with a beautiful shot from inside the area, scoring his 37th goal, equaling Benzema's number.
He scored the fourth after manipulating the defenders and hitting a ball with his right hand to the right of the goalkeeper, to become the fifth best scorer in the history of the national team.
The 24-year-old is only behind Giroud, Henry (51), Griezmann (43) and Michel Platini (41).
Dachan gave midfielder Kevrin Thuram his international beginnings, so that the son of the former international player, Lilian, would be present, along with his brother, striker Marcus, who remained on the bench.
In the other match of the second group, Greece won the European champion in 2004 at its host, modest Gibraltar 3-0, while the Republic of Ireland was absent from this round.
France will visit Ireland on Monday, while the Netherlands will host Gibraltar in Rotterdam on the same day.
Lukaku, the Italian striker, Inter, scored a hat-trick, beating his Swedish host, 3-0, at the “Frands Arena” in Solna, in Group F competitions.
Lukaku scored the hat-trick in the 35th and 49th minutes, with two assists for German striker Dodi Boukibakio, and 83, with a pass from substitute Johan Bakayoko.
It is Lukaku's third hat-trick with his country.
The "Red Devils" began in the best possible way their new era under the leadership of Tedesco, the successor of Spain's Roberto Martinez, and in the absence of their retired main pillars, most notably Eden Hazard, defender Toby Alderweireld and goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, after the disappointing exit from the first round of the Qatar World Cup.
The Belgian Federation hired the 37-year-old to succeed Martinez, despite his modest training record and contrary to the desire of some players such as Lukaku, who nominated former French star Thierry Henry to take over, based on his experience with the “Red Devils” since he took over in recent years the job of assistant coach.
Sweden coach Jan Anderson pushed AC Milan's veteran striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the 73rd minute to replace Newcastle striker Alexander Isaac. At the age of 41 years, five months and 21 days, he became the oldest player to play a match in the continental qualifiers, erasing the number of Italian goalkeeper Dino Zoff, who played against Sweden in particular. 29 May 1983 at the age of 41 years, three months and one day.
In the same group, Austria honored its guest, Azerbaijan, when it beat it 4-1, including a brace for Manchester United midfielder Marcel Sabitzer.
Austria topped the group standings with three points, on goal difference against Belgium. The two teams will meet in a fiery summit on June 17 in Brussels, in the third round.
Belgium will play an international friendly match next Tuesday against its host and neighbor Germany, while Austria will play with Estonia on Monday in the second round of Group F competitions, the same day that Sweden plays with its guest Azerbaijan.
In Group E, the Czech Republic beat Poland 3-1, and Moldova tied the Faroe Islands 1-1.
And in the seventh, Serbia beat its guest Lithuania 2-0, and Montenegro beat its host Bulgaria 1-0.
