New York - (AFP) - UN experts indicated that there is evidence of the use of chemical weapons by the Islamic State organization during the period in which it declared its "caliphate" in the areas it had controlled, in a report that is supposed to be discussed by the Security Council on Monday.

The report of the United Nations Investigative Team to Promote Accountability for Crimes Committed by the Islamic State referred to “the collection of documentary, digital and witness testimonial evidence” related to the use of chemical weapons in Iraq in the “caliphate” of the organization between 2014 and 2019.

In their report, the experts concluded that ISIS "manufactured and produced rockets, chemical mortars, chemical munitions for rocket-propelled grenades, chemical warheads, and improvised chemical explosive devices."

The report focused in particular on evidence "proving that ISIS made financial, logistical and procurement arrangements and links with leadership elements," in reference to the Islamic State.

He also noted a greater understanding of sites "where suspected weapons manufacturing, production and use activities have occurred across Iraq," and "more insight into the ISIL-manufactured materials and delivery systems used."

Investigators focused their efforts in particular on an attack in the Iraqi city of Taza Khurmato on March 8, 2016. They confirmed that they had collected a "large amount of evidence" including "ISIS payroll records and correspondence".

"Evidence related to the payment of martyrdom compensation to the families of ISIS members killed while deploying chemical weapons, and records of ISIS training for key operatives in the use of chemicals as weapons, including chemical dispersal devices," was examined in the report.

The report listed "a range of chemical/biological agents" that the organization has turned into weapons, including "aluminum phosphide, chlorine, cyanide, nicotine, ricin, and thallium sulfate."

The report stresses the "continuing health complications among the residents of Taza Khurmato, which include chronic diseases, cancers, and complications related to reproductive health."

The report also dealt with major crimes, especially sexual violence and persecution of Christians and others in Iraq, as well as the destruction of cultural and religious heritage.

On June 29, 2014, the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" announced the establishment of the "Islamic Caliphate" in the vast areas it controlled in Syria and Iraq.

And after it suffered its first defeat in Iraq in 2017 following battles with the Iraqi forces, the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces, led by the Kurdish fighters, announced on March 23, 2019, the organization's defeat after battles that lasted for several months, during which its fighters of different nationalities from Europe and countries were besieged. Asian and Arab, and thousands of their family members in Al-Baghouz, on the border with Iraq.

Despite its defeat, the extremist organization, through sleeper cells, continues to carry out attacks, albeit limited ones, in the two countries, especially against the security forces. It also claims attacks in other countries around the world.
