Elon Musk, the famous business and technology mogul, has become a powerful symbol not only in the fields of innovation but also in the political arena. For many years, Musk has been a symbol of leadership, launching a revolution in the fields of clean energy, electric vehicles, and space exploration through his companies such as Tesla and SpaceX. Today, with the announcement of former President Donald Trump’s victory in the recent US elections, the effects of Musk’s public support for the Trump campaign have emerged as a major topic of discussion, raising questions about the extent of Musk’s influence and his digital platforms on American politics.
First, it should be noted that Musk's involvement in politics is not new. He has previously expressed his political and economic views clearly, whether through social media platforms or through his statements at press conferences. However, during this election, he went beyond what was expected, as he used his digital influence on the "X" platform (formerly Twitter) to express his support for Trump, and he worked hard to present himself as one of his strongest allies in the technology sector, which earned him the title of "CTO of America." In contrast, Musk derives from Trump an anti-government stance in the technology sector and a support for market freedoms, which are trends that are in line with Musk's expansionist ambitions.
Among the steps Musk has taken to support Trump has been a full-fledged exploitation of the X platform, where he has about 143 million followers. Musk has promoted many of Trump’s political positions, especially regarding the economy and foreign policy, which has strengthened Trump’s position with a large base of followers, especially those who consider Musk a symbol of technological leadership. A Reuters poll shows that about 35% of X users see Musk as having a significant influence on American politics, confirming that his support for Trump has played an important role in reshaping their opinions.
Musk's support for Trump was not limited to tweets; media reports indicated that Musk also contributed significant financial resources to support the campaign, as some estimates indicate that Musk may have invested huge sums of money in financing Trump's election campaign activities, which reflects his determination to do everything he can to support Trump's return to the White House. However, this financial intervention has angered some, as his opponents believe that Musk's influence in politics may lead to unfair control by technology men over democracy, which makes them question the extent to which this money affects the integrity of the electoral process.
Musk and Trump’s relationship has not always been harmonious. Trump’s first term in office saw some tensions between them, as Trump rejected climate change policies that conflicted with Musk’s vision for clean energy. But Trump’s reimagining of these policies and his adoption of a new vision that supports expanding the private sector and encouraging economic freedoms has once again attracted Musk to be one of his most prominent supporters, especially in light of Musk’s vision that supports open trade and reducing government oversight. It seems that this renewed relationship between them is not limited to economic interests only, but rather reflects an overlap in political visions that go beyond technology.
Musk’s influence goes beyond simple political support. A Stanford University study found that about 25% of Musk’s followers were influenced by his political views, showing how deeply he influences public opinion. With this ability to influence, Musk has become not just a tech leader but also a public policy influencer. This raises concerns about the potential for tech entrepreneurs to use their influence to shape political outcomes in line with their own interests. With Trump’s election victory, these fears appear to be coming true.
Musk's interference in politics has not been without criticism. Many Democratic politicians have expressed reservations about the interference of technologists in politics, considering that what Musk is doing could pose a threat to true pluralism in the electoral process. Senator Elizabeth Warren has criticized this increasing technological role, pointing to "the danger of technology dominating democracy," and stressed that technologists should stay away from direct interference in politics, as she believes that Musk's support for Trump could lead to creating a state of great inequality in the electoral arena, which threatens fairness and fair competition between candidates.
But others see Musk's political intervention as nothing more than a legitimate expression of individuals' rights to influence the course of their country. Musk's supporters believe that his role in supporting Trump is an embodiment of the personal freedom that businessmen should enjoy, especially in a democratic environment that allows them the freedom to express their opinions and participate in directing the course of politics. They even believe that his role reflects the reality of the transformation taking place in the nature of the modern economy, which increasingly relies on technology and creative businessmen who drive the wheel of development and change.
With Trump’s victory, the question remains about the implications of this open political support from such high-profile tech figures and the role of technology in the future of American politics. Will this support have positive effects in enhancing freedom of expression and enriching political debate? Or will it lead to increased political polarization and contribute to the rise of the private sector’s dominance in decision-making?
In any case, Musk remains an undeniable figure, with his influence extending beyond technological innovation to politics, economics, and even social issues. As his influence continues to expand, Musk appears to be on a steady path toward greater influence on the course of American politics, raising new questions about the role of technology in modern democracies and whether that influence can be kept in check to ensure a more balanced political future.
