White House: We are confident that a wider war between Tel Aviv and Hezbollah can be avoided
White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said Monday that Israel has every right to respond to the Lebanese Hezbollah group, after a missile attack on the Golan Heights on Saturday.
But he added that the United States does not believe that this attack should lead to an escalation, because no one wants a comprehensive war, and America is confident in its ability to avoid such an outcome, considering that the Golan Heights are part of Israel, and that controlling it is still important for Israel's security, stressing that American policy on the Golan has not changed.
Kirby indicated that "there is no indication that the (Hezbollah) strike will affect the talks on the exchange of hostages," stressing that the talks are continuing.
