Harris Makes Major U-turn in White House Race After Biden Drops Out
A report by the Washington Post on Sunday reported that most of the banners that mocked President Biden during a rally of supporters of former President Donald Trump in the US state of Minnesota had disappeared.
The newspaper confirmed in its report that the presidential race has witnessed several transformations since President Biden announced his withdrawal from the presidential race, supporting the nomination of his deputy Kamala Harris instead of him.
It pointed to clear changes in the polls, which had been heavily favoring Trump compared to Biden, who Trump had a full 6-point lead over, while the latest Wall Street Journal poll showed that 49% of registered voters said they supported Trump and 47% supported Harris, indicating a major shift despite Trump’s continued two-point lead.
New Fox News polls in swing states found the candidates statistically tied in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, with Harris up by six points in Minnesota.
Mutual attack
The newspaper pointed out that Trump has not yet prepared a perfect attack against Harris, unlike his previous preparations for Biden. He used the same phrases he used against Biden, describing Harris as having low intelligence, which is the same term he used against Biden before in his attack. Later, yesterday, Saturday, during a rally in St. Cloud, Trump described Harris as his “new victim” and mocked her laughter.
In the same context, the newspaper pointed out that Harris, during a fundraising event in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, directed criticism at her competitor, noting that he is a convicted felon, saying: “I will proudly put my record against his any day.”
Harris’ allies responded with a new ad promoting her work as attorney general, state attorney general and vice president. The independent political action committee Future Forward said it would spend $50 million to support Harris ahead of the Democratic National Convention in August.
Meanwhile, another group, American Bridge 21st Century, is resuming its attack ads on Trump in swing states.
Harris’ allies tend to attack the new vice presidential nominee, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), as out of step with the values of most Americans, especially by highlighting his comments three years ago describing Democrats — including Harris — as “a bunch of miserable, childless cat ladies.”
Harris' financial support is growing.
A fundraiser for Harris in western Massachusetts on Saturday was expected to raise $1.4 million for the campaign, according to a co-organizer. The campaign said it raised $126 million from 1.4 million donors in the three days after Biden endorsed Harris.
The newspaper indicated in its report that the large increase in donations represents a reversal in the Democrats' fortunes, noting that since last June, Trump and the Republican Party had received very large donations compared to Biden and the Democrats.
Swing States Conflict
Across swing states, the Harris campaign said it was hosting 2,300 grassroots events this week to rally supporters. Many of the events have doubled as auditions for potential vice presidential candidates, including Walz, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
It is noteworthy that the campaign of former US President and current Republican candidate Donald Trump announced last Thursday that the billionaire currently refuses to set any timetable for a debate with his presumed Democratic rival Kamala Harris because she has not yet officially obtained the Democratic Party nomination.
US Vice President and potential Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has expressed her willingness to hold a debate with Republican candidate and former President Donald Trump in the elections scheduled for November.
Former US President Barack Obama announced on Friday his support for Vice President Kamala Harris for president, days after she launched her campaign following President Joe Biden's withdrawal from the race.
"Michelle and I are doing everything we can to help you get through this election and into the Oval Office," Obama said in a video clip showing Harris receiving a call from the Obama family.
A clash between the two parties
US Vice President Kamala Harris described herself as "not the candidate to win" the presidential election and called her Republican opponent Donald Trump a "total freak," while Trump called Harris a "crazy liberal" as the two competitors began a series of events as part of their election campaign.
The exchange comes after a tumultuous week that saw Harris rise to the top of the Democratic ticket after President Joe Biden, 81, abandoned his bid for a second term under increasing pressure from fellow Democrats.
A series of polls suggest that Harris' entry into the race has erased Trump's lead over Biden in a matter of days.
"A lot of what Trump and his running mate, U.S. Sen. J.D. Vance, are saying is just outlandish," Harris said in a speech at a private fundraiser featuring singer-songwriter James Taylor in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
Her use of the word “weird” to describe her opponents is part of a new strategy from Democrats. The Harris campaign called Trump “old and very weird” after he appeared on Fox News on Thursday, and at least one supporter showed up at an event Saturday holding a sign that read “Trump is abnormal.”
As she has done during a series of campaign events over the past few days, Harris again contrasted her record as a prosecutor with Trump's record as a convicted felon, saying her quest is about the future while Trump wants to return the country to a "dark past."
Hours later, Trump unleashed a barrage of attacks at a rally in St. Cloud, Minnesota, on issues ranging from public safety to immigration.
“If a crazy liberal like Kamala Harris gets into power, the American dream will die,” Trump said, adding that Harris is “worse” than Biden.
