Netanyahu will meet with Biden at the White House before delivering his speech to Congress

The American website "Axios" reported on Monday that US President Joe Biden will receive Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House next Monday, July 22, two days before Netanyahu delivers a speech before a joint session of the US Congress, both representatives and senators.

This will be their first meeting in the White House since Netanyahu took power in December 2022, as Biden refused for more than 10 months to receive Netanyahu in the White House due to the “judicial reforms” that Netanyahu was pushing in Israel. Biden held and met with Netanyahu on the sidelines of the General Assembly in September 2023, and again, when President Biden visited Israel in the wake of Hamas’ surprise attack on the Gaza envelope area in October 2023.

Biden and Netanyahu have also held frequent phone calls since October 7 to discuss Israeli military operations in Gaza. Media reports have portrayed the relationship between the two leaders as unstable, but Biden has provided strong military and political support for Netanyahu's genocidal war.

This support continues even as Netanyahu sabotages chances of reaching a ceasefire agreement with Hamas. Israeli officials told the media that Netanyahu does not want to reach an agreement before his speech to Congress because he sees it as an opportunity to gain more American support, which he hopes will increase his domestic support.

Netanyahu has a history of controversial speeches before Congress, including in 2015, when he gave a speech opposing the Iran nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). He also played a key role in pressuring the Trump administration to tear up the agreement, which kept Iran's civilian nuclear program under strict restrictions.

In 2002, Netanyahu testified before Congress urging the United States to invade Iraq, promoting the false narrative that Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction. Netanyahu said: “There is absolutely no doubt that Saddam is seeking, working and progressing towards developing nuclear weapons.”

He also claimed that regime change in Iraq would inspire a revolution in Iran. He said: "If you overthrow Saddam, Saddam's regime, I guarantee you that it will have tremendous positive repercussions on the region."
