19 killed and injured in armed attacks in Dagestan targeting a police station, churches, and a synagogue
19 people, including a priest, were killed and wounded in armed attacks in Dagestan, which targeted, on Sunday evening, a police station, churches and a synagogue, in the autonomous Republic of Dagestan of the Russian Federation.
"Police deaths in armed attacks rose to six officers, and 12 others were injured," RIA Novosti reported, citing the Dagestan Ministry of the Interior.
Before that, the Russian “Rubtly” agency confirmed, “The killing of two gunmen who carried out the attack on the police station in the capital of Dagestan.”
The news agency reported, “A police officer was killed following an armed attack targeting a Jewish synagogue and a church in the Autonomous Republic of Dagestan of the Russian Federation.”
The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that a “joint attack was carried out on two cities in the Dagestan province, in Makhachkala and Derbent.”
She stated that "the synagogue in Derbent was completely burned, and the local guards were killed," adding that "the Jewish synagogue in Makhachkala was attacked by gunfire, and there are no other details" regarding that.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry added, "As far as is known, there were no worshipers in the synagogues at the time of the attack, and there were no casualties among the Jewish community."
The Foreign Ministry indicated that "the Israeli embassy in Moscow is conducting contacts with leaders of the Jewish community in the region."
She noted that, "At the same time, churches were attacked in Makhachkala, and a priest was killed in Derbent."
