Israel opposes UN resolution on moving forward with recognition of the Palestinian state
On Wednesday, the Israeli government unanimously approved Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s proposal to reject the recently issued United Nations General Assembly resolution on moving forward with recognition of the Palestinian state.
The Israeli Prime Minister's Office said in a statement: "The government, on Wednesday, unanimously approved Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's proposal to reject the United Nations General Assembly resolution issued on May 10, 2024."
In this regard, Netanyahu said: “Today, the government opposed the United Nations resolution last week regarding moving forward with recognition of the Palestinian state.”
He claimed that he would not allow the Palestinians to establish a state “through which they can attack us forcefully,” as he put it.
He claimed, "No one will prevent us and will not prevent Israel from exercising our fundamental right to self-defense. Neither the United Nations General Assembly nor any other body. We will stand united with our heads held high to defend our country."
According to the Israeli Prime Minister's Office, the government decided to "reject the United Nations General Assembly resolution of May 10, 2024 to lift the status of the Palestinian Authority and grant it additional privileges, which are usually reserved for UN member states."
The Israeli decision added: “Nothing in the aforementioned decision will change the status of the lands in question; nothing in it grants any right, or detracts from any rights of the State of Israel and the Jewish people in the Land of Israel.”
He considered that the United Nations General Assembly's resolution "will not constitute a basis for future negotiations, and will not provide a peaceful solution."
With a majority of 143 votes, 9 against, and 25 abstentions, on May 10, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution supporting Palestine’s application for full membership in the United Nations, and recommending that the Security Council reconsider the application.
The resolution also identified ways to implement additional rights and privileges related to Palestine's participation in the United Nations.
The resolution affirmed "the General Assembly's conviction that the State of Palestine is fully qualified for membership in the United Nations in accordance with its Charter, and indicates widespread support from the organization's member states for accepting Palestine as a member."
Last April, the United States used its veto power in the Security Council against an Algerian draft resolution recommending that the General Assembly accept the State of Palestine as a member of the United Nations.
12 members supported the resolution, while Switzerland and the United Kingdom abstained from voting.
Palestine is a member state with observer status in the United Nations in accordance with the resolution of the United Nations General Assembly on November 29, 2012.
