The German government urged Israel to urgently improve humanitarian conditions in the Gaza Strip and emphasized the necessity of a ceasefire and reaching a lasting political settlement based on a two-state solution.
German government representative for human rights and humanitarian aid, Lars Castelucci, stated that "the Israeli government must fully and sustainably improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza without delay, in accordance with humanitarian principles and international law."
He condemned the suffering of civilians, especially children, "who bear no guilt or responsibility."
He noted that Germany has increased the amount of humanitarian aid sent to Gaza "multiple times," but it "remains ineffective" as long as it does not reach those in need.
While Castelucci pointed to Germany's "special responsibility" regarding Israel's security and the necessity for the "immediate release" of hostages held in the region, he stressed the need for a ceasefire and a lasting political settlement based on a two-state solution.
Germany has been one of Israel's main supporters since the outbreak of the war in the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023.
However, Chancellor Friedrich Merz's government has recently changed its tone towards Tel Aviv in light of the catastrophic humanitarian conditions in the besieged region.
The United Nations officially declared famine in the Gaza Strip on August 22, where about 500,000 people live in "catastrophic" conditions.
The Israeli aggression on Gaza has resulted in the martyrdom of approximately 63,500 people, most of whom are civilians, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health, figures that the United Nations considers "reliable."
The Israeli government must fully and sustainably improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza without delay.
