Swedish police investigating a criminal act after a fire in a mosque
The Swedish police opened an investigation into an intentional act, after a fire Monday destroyed a mosque in Eskilstuna in the center of the country.
Police said on their website on Tuesday: “The investigation into the fire is continuing.
The police will interview witnesses and check whether there are surveillance cameras in the area.”
During midday on Monday, a fire broke out in a mosque in the town of Eskilstuna, located about 100 kilometers west of Stockholm, without causing any casualties, according to a spokesman for the police investigating the incident, told Agence France-Presse. No one has been arrested yet.
"The mosque was almost completely destroyed and nothing can be repaired," Anas Dinesh, the mosque's spokesman, told AFP. According to emergency services, the fire engulfed the main building, causing the roof to collapse.
Dinesh added, "Many children, women and men ran to the site crying. I have never seen so many people crying like this," explaining that everyone asked the same questions: "What happened, who did it?"
Dinesh refers to a year that included many acts of violence against the mosque, and also against his family. "But it is still too early to draw conclusions, and we have to wait for the police to do their job," he said.
The police confirmed that there are various hypotheses on the cause of the fire, without providing further details.
Between 15,000 and 20,000 Muslims live in Eskilstuna, while the city's population is about 108,000 people.
