The United Nations Human Rights Council adopts a resolution urging countries to stop unilateral sanctions
On Monday, the United Nations Human Rights Council adopted a resolution urging all states to stop imposing unilateral coercive measures that are inconsistent with international law and principles governing peaceful relations between states.
The resolution was adopted by 33 votes in favour, 13 against, with one abstention.
The resolution requests that the UN Special Rapporteur on the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures on the enjoyment of human rights continue her work to propose measures to ensure the abolition of such measures, and requests her to focus on the resources and compensation needed to enhance accountability, as well as redress for victims, in her next report. to the council.
In addition, the resolution requests the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to organize a panel discussion every two years on the impact of unilateral coercive measures on the right to development and the achievement of sustainable development goals. This discussion will be held at the 54th session of the Council next September.
