Haaretz: The Israeli strikes in Syria are an attempt to restore deterrence after the Megiddo operation
The Hebrew newspaper Haaretz said, on Tuesday, that the repeated Israeli strikes against Iran and Hezbollah in Syria aim at trying to restore deterrence against them and restore the balance of terror to prevent any new attacks after the attack that took place at the Megiddo intersection near Haifa, when an explosive device was detonated on the thirteenth of last March. As a result, a Palestinian resident of the Green Line was seriously injured, and the perpetrator of the attack was killed after he was pursued before returning to Lebanon.
According to the newspaper, Israel has so far hinted at Hezbollah's responsibility for the operation with the help of Iran, but it has not yet officially accused them, noting that the intensified attacks in recent days seem to come in response to the Megiddo attack, which is seen as a radical departure from Hezbollah's policy in the past decade and a half.
The newspaper says: "It can be assumed that Israel saw in the attack evidence of a new line adopted by Hezbollah with Iranian encouragement, and the Lebanese party appreciates, as evidenced by the speeches of its illiterate general, Hassan Nasrallah, that Israel is mired in internal crises, and therefore will refrain from harsh reactions, in addition to So they believe in Tehran and Beirut that it is possible to link the friction in the north with the Palestinian events and attacks and encourage more of them, especially during the month of Ramadan.
She indicated that the Israeli attacks prompted Iran to send a drone on Sunday evening, before it was shot down over Wadi al-Hula, and it was not reported whether it was offensive or on a filming mission, noting that Iran took a similar step from Syria in 2018, followed by air strikes. It lasted about 3 months.
The newspaper says, however, that despite the political and constitutional crisis, the Israeli response policy has been completely restricted so far, noting that Israel seems to have avoided attacking Hezbollah targets in Lebanon to prevent the region from being dragged into the war, and therefore focuses its attacks against Hezbollah and Iran targets in Syria.
