"Supporting Journalists": about 85 violations against media freedoms in Palestine last month

During the monthly report on the state of press freedoms in March 2023, the Journalist Support Committee monitored about (85) violations against media freedoms and journalists, including (53) Israeli violations, and (25) violations by internal Palestinian parties, in addition to recording more than (7) Violations by social media companies, in the framework of combating Palestinian content.


The Israeli attacks in the occupied Palestinian territories, during March, were represented in the injury and assault of more than (11) journalists by the occupation forces, with the participation of settlers, attacking them, beating them with sticks, kicking and pushing them on the ground, and trying to run over some of them, while they were covering the violations of the occupation and its settlers against citizens in the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem. .


In terms of arrests, the Israeli occupation forces arrested, detained, and summoned (13) journalists for interrogation and forced them not to cover and carry out their journalistic duties.


In addition, the Israeli military courts extended and postponed the detention and renewal of a sentence for (5) journalists, namely the extension of the detention of journalist Amer Abu Arafa before releasing him later, the actual prison sentence of 11 months for journalist Samer Abu Aisha from Jerusalem, and the postponement of the trial of journalist Lama Abu Ghosheh. And extending her house arrest twice, and extending the administrative detention of journalist Omar Abu Al-Rub for the fourth time in a row since his arrest.


And regarding the occupation preventing journalists from covering and performing their duties, the report recorded (2) a case of preventing journalists from covering the occupation's violations against citizens in the occupied Palestinian territories, shooting and attacking the occupation and its settlers, journalists, including beatings and trampling.


The report records the registration of (2) the closure of the Voice of Palestine Radio office in occupied Jerusalem, preventing its representatives from holding any event for it, and banning its broadcasting in the occupied city of Jerusalem, and within the territories of 48, for a valid period of six months under the pretext of incitement.


And within the framework of the fierce and systematic campaign launched by social media sites, especially that owned by the "Meta" company, to combat Palestinian content under pressure from the Israeli occupation, the report of the Journalist Support Committee during the March 2023 report recorded more than (7) cases distributed by deleting Instagram ( 1), Facebook deleted and blocked the pages of (4) journalists, including the "Watan Agency" page, and blocked its content from about 3.6 million followers, and also deleted the accounts of the page's editors.


Likewise, the “YouTube” administration (1) permanently deleted the “Jerusalem Drama Today” channel, claiming that it was broadcasting the series “Birth of Dawn 2” “Intifada”, which violates the standards of Nazism and racism.


It was also recorded (1) that France 24, the French journalist, Leila Odeh, was suspended from work because of her support for Palestine.
