The Teachers' Movement announces the continuation of the strike, despite the government's declaration of its commitment to the agreements

The Teachers' Movement announced, Thursday evening, the continuation of the strike and protest activities, and the call for a central sit-in in front of the Council of Ministers in Ramallah next week, despite Prime Minister Muhammad Shtayyeh's announcement of the government's commitment to the agreements signed with the unions that demand their rights and carry out protests.

The Unified Teachers Movement confirmed in a press release that the events previously announced in its statements will be on time, so that next Monday, a central sit-in will be held in front of the Council of Ministers in Ramallah. To confirm the rejection of penalties in all its forms, especially the method of deduction from their salaries, while the “movement” stressed the continuation of the open strike (with going to schools) and leaving after proof of attendance, and without giving any quota for all stages, including the Tawjihi, and the “teachers’ movement” refused to monitor the Employment exam in all provinces.

The movement said: "The government's speech did not bring any qualitative addition to what was presented previously, and it did not contain points that would change the current position of the movement, as it did not refer to the implementation of the detailed provisions of the institutions' initiative that the government signed on last May, and this is what we consider A fundamental defect in the government's speech today, Thursday, as postponing all or part of items kills any solutions that could have resolved the crisis." The "mobility movement" stressed that the implementation of the salary deduction is a dangerous turn of events.

For his part, a source from the striking teachers, who preferred not to be named, said in an interview with Al-Quds.com: “The refusal of what the Prime Minister announced came because there were discounts on the striking teachers after the February salary was paid today, Thursday, which amounted to More than a thousand shekels, which fueled the crisis, which requires the government to quickly resolve this issue.

According to the same source, there is a discussion taking place among the teachers about whether or not the strike will continue, and next week will be decisive regarding the continuation of the strike and protests. He represents them, as they were forced to strike outside the ranks of the union, which requires accelerating the democratization of the union.

For his part, teacher Faisal Jadallah from the Nablus Education Directorate, and one of the observers of the agreement concluded with teachers last year, told Al-Quds.com, "The announcement of the continuation of the teachers' strike and protest activities, since the Prime Minister's speech did not refer to the agreement that was concluded, And that what is being talked about by the government does not implement the terms of the agreement, and the speech ignored not only the initiative, but also the teachers.

On the other hand, Jadallah said: "The deductions that were implemented on last month's salary, and it became clear after disbursing it today, that there were deductions that amounted to more than a thousand shekels for some teachers, came in the context of the aggravation of the crisis."

Jadallah stressed that teachers want to implement the agreement, which is the minimum of teachers' demands and aspirations, and the government is supposed to abide by it, since everyone signed it, while stressing that the teachers' demand to "democratize the union" does not mean its abolition.

For about a month, teachers carried out sit-ins in front of the headquarters of the education directorates in the West Bank in response to the "teachers' movement", amid the teachers' insistence on demanding their rights until the implementation of an agreement concluded, in May 2022, between the Palestinian government, the General Union of Palestinian Teachers and the "mobility". Teachers”, sponsored by many institutions and personalities, and the strike stopped after that.

The agreement included 5 items, namely: returning discounts to teachers, professionalizing education, issuing a teacher protection law, working to “democratize the union”, and depositing a 15% bonus for the nature of work on the salary slip, starting from the first month of the new year 2023.
